She did not anticipate deviations from developed habits. Even during the war, hygiene and proper care were her priority. She stocked up on hard-to-find medications and created her own creams, which she claimed had health-promoting and beautifying properties, but she never revealed their formula.

Many admired Irena Kwiatkowska not only for her outstanding roles, but also for her health. Even in the last years of her life, she was in great shape and did not struggle with any chronic diseases. However, few know that the actress faced death several times, and once was even close to leaving this world.

She risked her life for the first time during World War II, during which she was a liaison officer. The situation she mentioned to Krzysztof Kowalewski for the purposes of the book “Irena Kwiatkowska and known perpetrators” took place during the Warsaw Uprising. She was suffering from fatigue and general exhaustion of her body. Regardless of the circumstances, she decided to sleep on a windowsill in one of the buildings.

Soon after, she had to face danger again. One day she was given the task of delivering a report. On the way to the designated place, she miraculously escaped death from an artillery shell that nearly hit her in the head. However, that was not the end of the adventures. When she opened the door of the apartment to which she was directed, she fell straight into the trap of the Gestapo.

Irena Kwiatkowska loved life and, despite her age, still felt that she had a lot to offer the world. Nevertheless, she emphasized that she was not afraid of death, and when the right moment came, she would calmly leave this world, because she knew that she would go straight to heaven. What was her conviction?

When she was in her 90s, she was close to leaving this world. Although nothing was wrong with her, due to her obsessive care for her health, but also her age, Kwiatkowska regularly attended check-ups. It was during one of the visits that an unexpected congestion occurred. She immediately lost consciousness and the doctors rushed to her aid. Unfortunately, resuscitation turned out to be ineffective, saturation was falling and a moment later the specialists lost hope. When pronounced dead, she regained consciousness. “I have experienced death. I went to heaven, but I didn’t want to stay there yet. I asked God to let me come back,” she later said. The event was a shock not only for the artist, but also for all the doctors who witnessed her clinical death.

In the mid-90s, the actress retired. For some time she lived alone, and later she moved to the House of Veteran Artists of Polish Stages in Skolimów. Irena Kwiatkowska died on March 3, 2011 at the age of 98.
