Friends, in the good and the bad. This is the relationship of Rita, Helen and Malena, three women with love, money and family problems who, in the midst of a critical situation in common, will live together to find a solution that brings them closer to their ideals, even though society criticizes their decisions. These characters will come to life through Ecuadorian actresses Ruth Coello, Hilda Saraguayo Y maricela gomezprotagonists of witchesa play that today (Thursday, June 23) is scheduled to premiere at the La Bota room, on the Salado boardwalk.
“It’s not about fairy tale witches; It’s about three friends who live together and, based on everything they’ve lived together, that part of witches that women sometimes have comes out, and one wants to correct and the other gives ideas. There is always the mischievous friend, the one who wants to give you advice and the sensible one. There are going to be many women who are going to identify themselves”, says Saraguayo about this production, directed and written by Joseph Rengifo.
Coello, who plays Rita, assures that in this comedy its protagonists will have to make a decision that will completely change their lives. “They will make a decision that takes them to another side, and they will have to do the unexpected, because women, when we pass some limit, we have to act; That is why they may be told that they are witches. They also remember their youth, and sing and dance. It is a mix between music, theater, drama, novel. Rita is a woman whose life has gone wrong; she is of humble origin, but since she is the “whitest” she thinks she is the girlish one of the group, but she is just like her friends. She is from Tarifa”, she adds.
The differences between them are precisely the reasons that bring them closer. “Hellen is the complete opposite of Ruth’s character. She is super fun; she left her house at an early age. She has had many boyfriends and her purpose has always been to live well. She wants to have a man who supports her to live well. We are all poor. The particular thing about my character is that she has always thought she was good, (but) she speaks badly. She wears designer clothes, but she doesn’t even know how to pronounce them. She gets upset with her friends because they correct her. She is uninhibited”, explains Saraguayo.
Gómez, on the other hand, personifies Malena. “She is the serious one who hides a secret, that she is dragging it without the others noticing. We all hide a secret, because we have done something bad to each other. There is a lot of intrigue”, says Coello.
According to Coello, the three characters became friends while working together. “They met while working in a brothel, and they go to live on Mocolí Island together, because they believe they deserve to live well. And when they move they find that they can’t afford that lifestyle, and will do whatever it takes to maintain that status. We went to Sambo to see if they get a sugar daddy. We will have to go to extremes to stay there, ”he adds.
witches it is a production that allows Saraguayo, Gómez and Coello to work together for the second time. “In 2019 we did a play called three misfortunes, and that went super well for us; It was just before the pandemic. As we have different audiences, and what it gives to the works is a very interesting element, that is the richness, that we put our personalities so particular, which results in a good formula”, says Coello.
According to Saraguayo, the idea of working on this project arose before the pandemic, until they resumed production between February and March.
witches It will be on stage on June 24, 25 and 30 and July 1 and 2. The cost of admission is $10. (AND)
