Do you wash these products before cooking? Better give it up

Some people find it natural to wash it before putting it in the pot. Usually, it is not pleasant to the touch and we do not know what happened to it before the purchase, and whether it has any harmful bacteria on it. It turns out that doing this is a mistake. Water does not kill germs, but only contributes to their spread throughout the product. If the stream you use to rinse meat hits a countertop, cutting board or plates, bacteria will develop on their surface, which over time will transfer to other products and things. The best and healthiest way to remove germs from meat is to heat it – boiling, frying and baking. Also, do not wash meat that you intend to freeze or store in the refrigerator after purchase. Water is not only a breeding ground for bacteria, but also accelerates its spoilage.

It turns out that the situation is the same when it comes to fish. Only seafood such as mussels, scallops or oysters, which often contain sand particles, can be washed before processing.

What should not be washed before cooking? The list is long

It turns out that not only meat does not need to be washed before consumption, and the list is much longer.

  1. Eggs — The product is covered with a mucin sheath (cuticle), which isolates microbes and prevents them from getting inside. After purchase, just put it in the fridge, thanks to which it will stay fresh. It is worth washing eggs just before consumption.
  2. Pickles — Rinsing sauerkraut robs it of its flavor and washes out the health-promoting probiotics in the juice. In the case of pickled cucumbers, the white coating from the top is lactic acid bacteria that do not harm health (on the contrary – they support the proper functioning of the intestines) and you do not need to get rid of them.
  3. Mushrooms – Soaking these forest products for a long time will cause them to absorb water, change their structure and lose their taste. To clean them, remove sand and grass with a brush or a wet cloth. You can also briefly rinse the mushrooms under running water in a sieve, making sure that they do not soak up too much.
  4. Pasta – Not many people do it, but you should not wash the pasta before cooking. The action will wash away the precious starch, thanks to which the product is slightly sticky and combines well with the sauce. It is worth, however, after cooking, pour a glass of water to later use it, for example, to thicken the sauce.
