More and more often we can hear about the victims of the “American soldier” method. As the name suggests, scammers impersonate US military personnel in such cases. When they manage to gain the victim’s trust, they ask for financial support. Another popular method of scammers is the “grandson” method. In this case, the victims are usually the elderly. Fraudsters call them claiming to be a loved one and then ask for money.
– They are ruthless and creative, we are talking about scammers who use social engineering methods to deceive unsuspecting interlocutors. Their ways are constantly evolving, and the victims of manipulation are most often seniors (although not only) – we can read on the police website.
“Mom, we caused an accident”
Recently, the media began to report on a new “just in case” method. The police described the story of a 72-year-old woman who may have lost her life savings.
As we can read, the woman answered the phone and heard the voice of a crying woman. The caller asked her for PLN 80,000. “Mom, we caused an accident, I think we killed someone on a crosswalk, we need money for a lawyer,” she said.
After a while, a man who claimed to be his son-in-law spoke up. He said that they had been detained and were now waiting for the indicated amount to be transferred to the policeman. Then the 72-year-old heard the voice of another man who claimed to be a police officer. He explained that her relatives were involved in an accident in which one person died. He also asked for the address where the police were to come to pick up the money necessary to pay the bail.
The woman stated to the interlocutor that she would immediately go to the nearest police station and find out for herself whether the said accident really took place. At the police station, the duty officer quickly determined that the described event did not happen at all.
She lost her life savings
The woman found out that she may have become another victim of the scam. Police officers informed her that her peer from the Wrocław district had recently lost as much as PLN 750,000. In this case, the scammers used a similar method.
Police officers NEVER ask for money, they do not inform about their phone cases, they do not involve random people in their proceedings. Anyone can fall victim to manipulation! If you receive a phone call telling you about a “secret police operation” that you are about to take part in and they ask you for money, don’t get into an argument. End the call and inform the nearest unit about everything
