In the second half of 1991, only one thing could be heard throughout Poland: “Siabada, siabada, you and me, Mydełko Fa”. it became a hit, even topping the Chicago charts for a time.
Behind the scenes of the creation of “Soap Fa”. A pastiche that has become a timeless hit
Before disco polo was created, similar sounds and lyrics could be heard in the so-called sidewalk song. “Soap Fa”, the text of which was inspired by a kitschy advertisement for this product, was supposed to mock this genre. Instead, the piece became a real anthem of camp music, winning the hearts of millions of Poles around the world. – A naked lady on the screen, and some guy on a white horse, a macho type, was sitting nearby. – Andrzej Korzyński, the author of the text of the song – He was waiting for her to clean up and get on the horse, which they would leave together. This ad was so cool that it made us laugh a lot. That was the reason I wrote the song about soaping up in the bathtub.
Unfortunately, the popularity of the song was not entirely a cause for joy. Marek Kondrat admitted in an interview in 2003 that “it was supposed to be fun, but it turned out to be a nightmare”. The pastiche was meant to poke fun at sidewalk songs, not become one of the genre’s most popular pieces. – As a result, my voice came from every window in Polish Bździejewo for months, I even took the first place on the charts in Chicago. Two million Poles in Jaceków pollinated “Soap Fa” – confessed the artist. Kondrat refused to participate in concerts. His parts were sung by Mariusz Czajka.
The creators earned nothing for the big hit. All because of one thief
Although “Soap Fa” became a real hit, its creators did not earn much from it. Why? All because of illegal copies of carriers with the song sold at every market in Poland. Just three days before the release of the album, pirated cassettes hit the stalls. According to some estimates, about 1.5 million of them were sold. The thief who took the unreleased materials outside the studio was never caught.
Interestingly, people did not care about the rest of the songs recorded by the duo Drozdowska-Kondrat. They just wanted their own copy of Soap Fa. – This song was an attachment, at the end of the album we recorded with Marek Kondrat. There is something in this song, some strange energy. It just rhymes very well with “Siabad” – admitted Marlena Drozdowska in an interview with the hosts of “Dzień Dobry TVN”.
