Alec Baldwin returns to the set of Rust. More than a year after the operator was shot

Despite ongoing legal proceedings against Alec Baldwin, who shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in a tragic accident on the set of Rust, the team is back to work on the production. Baldwin will finish shooting and director Joel Souza has also returned to his position. Manufacturers, however, banned the use of live ammunition.

The shooting of Rust can be resumed thanks to the fact that the family of Halyna Hutchins, who died tragically, withdrew the lawsuit against the producers and a settlement was reached, in which the cameraman’s husband became the executive producer of the film. He will also receive a share of the profits. The whole team is committed to completing the project.

Alec Baldwin returns to ‘Rust’ set

Rust Movie Productions’ lawyer Melina Spadone confirmed the resumption of production on the set of Rust. She also said that security coordinators will be on site as well as trained team members to ensure that weapons and ammunition are used in complete safety. The lawyer emphasized that there was also a full ban on bringing and using live ammunition on the set.

It is unknown at this stage if Baldwin remains a co-producer on Rust. Contrary to earlier announcements by director Joel Souza, who announced that production would start in January 2023, shooting will start in the spring at Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana.

On October 21, 2021, a tragic accident occurred on the set of the western “Rust”. Alec Baldwin accidentally shot two people with what was supposed to be a safe prop. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot dead on the spot, while director Joel Souza suffered non-life-threatening hand wounds.

After the accident, a thorough investigation was launched and production of the film was halted indefinitely. Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies announced on January 19, 2023 that Alec Baldwin and gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will face manslaughter charges. Under state law, those are degree four felonies. They are punishable by up to 18 months in prison and a fine of five thousand dollars.

The family of the deceased released a statement after the charges were announced: “It is a great comfort to us that in New Mexico no one is above the law. We support these allegations, we will fully cooperate with the prosecutors and we hope that the judiciary will act to protect the public and ensure that those who break the law will suffer the consequences.” Alek Baldwin’s lawyer, however, believes that the allegations against the actor are “a terrible miscarriage of justice”.

In a statement given to USA Today, he explained that his client “had no right to even suspect that the gun was loaded with live ammunition or that it was on the set at all. He relied on the professionals he worked with who assured him that the revolver was not has sharp bullets. Therefore, they will seek to amend the charges.
