The 95th edition of the Oscars will have “a whole crisis team” to prevent unforeseen events from occurring at the 2023 gala, such as the Will Smith slap Chris Rock last year, as announced by the director of the Hollywood Academy, Bill Kramer, in an interview with Time magazine.
“We have a whole crisis team, something we’ve never had before, and we will put other protocols in place after contemplating various scenarios”, Kramer explained about this “unprecedented” decision by the Hollywood Academy in its 96-year history.
The president has detailed that the “planning” has been based on creating a “series of communication structures and equipment” to meet as quickly as possible and act together, if an unexpected event occurs.
“Because of what happened last year, we have opened our minds to all the things that can happen at the Oscars. This way we will not decide on the fly the group that we have to assemble, who will be the spokesperson or the format of the statement,” Kramer added.
Just ten days ago, the president of the Hollywood Academy, Janet Yang, admitted that the organization mismanaged the case of the slap that Smith gave Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars ceremony.
“What we experienced last year was unacceptable and our response was not up to par. It was a turning point to act with greater transparency and responsibility,” Yang said at this year’s nominees luncheon.
The 94th edition of the Oscars was marked by the famous actor’s slap to the comedian, after the latter joked about Smith’s wife’s shaved head, Jada Pinkett-Smith, who suffers from alopecia
The audience witnessed the act in amazement and minutes later the performer went up on stage again to receive the award for best actor for his work on the film “King Richard.”
The Academy took no action until days later, when banned Smith from participating in the ceremony of the Oscars for the next ten years. For this reason, this year they have taken some measures that they hope will take effect in the 95th delivery of these awards, which will be held on March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles (United States).
