On August 4, 1967, just after midnight, 15-year-old James Gordon Wolcott, intoxicated by the fumes of model glue, grabbed his rifle and shot his father, mother and 17-year-old sister. Then he got dressed and left the house. He stopped one of the passing cars and reported that his family had been shot. The father was found in the living room, the sister in her bedroom. They both died on the spot, two bullets were found in their bodies. James’ mother was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. We couldn’t save her.

James was arrested that same night and pleaded guilty. It was in vain to look for any sign of remorse from him. He even refused to attend the funeral ceremony. When asked why he cold-blooded his family, he stated that he genuinely hated them. The psychiatrists who questioned him said that he had had enough of his mother’s munching and loud chewing, his older sister’s “bad accent” and his father’s disapproval of the teenager’s anti-war views. He claimed that the family “colluded against him to piss him off”. “I killed them before they had a chance to kill me.”
During the trial, the experts declared James insane. According to them, he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and had been fighting suicidal thoughts for months. In the process, he was supposed to be unaware of his actions. The jury found him not guilty, and the court agreed with the experts. In February 1968, James Gordon Wolcott was committed to involuntary psychiatric treatment. Just seven years later, James was released from the hospital. The psychiatrists working there decided that he was ready to return to freedom. He changed his name, and he was not heard from for many years.
