Spain introduced paid menstrual leave. This is the first country in Europe

Spain was the first in Europe to introduce a three-day sick leave for people suffering from severe menstrual pain. In special cases, the right to time off due to menstruation will be extended to up to five working days a month.

It is estimated that as many as 75 percent of young women and 25-50 percent of mature women suffer from menstrual pain, which for every fifth of them is so strong that it prevents normal functioning. In some places around the world, laws have been in place for years allowing people to leave work due to menstrual problems. Such leave can be taken every month in Indonesia, South Korea and some parts of China, among others.

In the West, the problem is only beginning to be noticed. At the end of last week, Spain became the first country in Europe where people suffering from menstrual pain will be able to take paid leave during this time. The solution announced last year was passed by the lower house of the Spanish parliament.

The new law provides for a three-day exemption, which can be extended to five days in some cases. The second option will be for people who suffer from painful menstruation, causing nausea, vomiting, dizziness or severe cramps. The costs of the leave will be covered by the public social security system and the exemption will require a medical certificate.

Irene Montero: This is a historic moment

Spanish Equality Minister Irene Montero said after the changes were adopted that this was a historic moment of progress for feminist rights. However, she noted that there is a lot of hard work ahead of them. “We must ensure that this law is enforced when it comes into force,” she said.
