More and more often it happens that employees who like their work and fulfill their duties well decide to change. Employers blame the “young generation” and the times we live in for this. It turns out, however, that in most cases, the superiors are responsible for the decision to change. Management consultant Terina Allen spoke about it some time ago in Forbes Women. Now, on the Wemeancareer portal, there is a list of six bosses’ behaviors that will make a good employee leave.
1. Lack of trust in the employee
The first behavior that can spoil relations in the office and discourage an employee from performing the tasks entrusted to him is a lack of trust. Managers who want to be in control and can’t give the employee space to prove themselves are considered toxic. Advising, correcting and analyzing each stage of the work performed can cause anxiety and unnecessary stress for the employee. It is important to trust the employee that he is doing his job to the best of his ability. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with giving directions, but over-control isn’t good for anyone.
2. Underestimating successes
Employees who do not feel appreciated quickly become discouraged. Unfair remuneration, not granting bonuses and bonuses are factors that have a huge impact on the decision to leave. However, it’s not always about money. Managers who do not praise the work done by their charges create a negative atmosphere. It is likely that the employee will look for a job that will appreciate his contribution to the development of the company.
3. Lack of motivation to develop
What makes an employee good at their job? First of all, he is ambitious and wants to expand his competences. Unfortunately, not all bosses realize this. Instead of motivating their team to develop and expand their competencies and provide them with training in other areas, they focus on delegating the same responsibilities over and over again. Monotony and lack of development prospects make ambitious people look for challenges elsewhere.
4. Poor managerial skills
Another common reason why good employees leave is having a manager with poor leadership skills. For example, they may have poor interpersonal skills or fail to communicate effectively with employees. They also often create a toxic work environment.
5. Unrealistic expectations
Unrealistic expectations of the boss towards the employee are the most common cause of job dissatisfaction. Employees are often overwhelmed by responsibilities that are outside of their job description. It happens that they stay “after hours” and do not get paid for it. The expectations of the boss disturb the balance between work and private life.
6. Disrespecting employees
A big mistake managers make is disrespecting employees. Looking down on them and assuming they’re just there to follow orders is a mistake. Everyone should be approached individually and communicated as a partnership. Ignoring an employee’s concerns and taking credit for them are good reasons to look elsewhere for employment.
