As she recalled in one of the interviews, when she got the script for the pilot episode, she was going to read only the first few pages to see if it was worth reading the rest. “I started reading after 1am and ended up reading until 4am, giggling nonstop,” she told The One Show.

Patricia Routledge was born on February 17, 1929 in Tranmere. She began her professional career in 1952 at the Liverpool Playhouse, and in 1966 she made her Broadway debut in the musical How’s the World Treating You. Two years later, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Darling of the Day.
One of the charming vices of her heroine Jacinta was a high opinion of her own singing abilities. So she howled at the top of her voice at every possible opportunity, and her piano player neighbor, every time he had to listen to or accompany her, experienced real agony.
Despite the passage of years, Routledge still loves singing, and the proof that she is still a real stage beast is the recording from October 2020. Then, with incredible energy, impeccable diction and great commitment, she performed the song “I’ve Been to a Marvelous Party”. It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 30 years since the premiere of the cult series. Patricia looks almost identical:
