It has little or nothing to do the Carnival of Cádiz with that of Tenerife. While the first focuses on humor and music, with its traditional contest of carnival groups (and, among them, the chirigotas, the best known outside the borders of Cádiz), the second does so in the light and color show. The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which has been going on for just over two decades It was the world capital of Carnivalfocuses each year on a different theme and after the unprecedented 2022 edition (unpublished because it was held for the first time in summer), focused on science fiction, this year’s has been inspired by New York life.

Among a total of 15 candidates, this Wednesday the Canary city has chosen the one is your new queen of Carnival, Adriana Peña, representing the Añaza Carrefour Shopping Center and with a fantasy titled ‘Lisboa’, by the designer Santi Castro —who also won the first prize at Carnival 2022—. As in 2022, Peña has been chosen by the jury and also by popular voterepresented by the public present at the venue and those who followed the show on television.

With this, The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife already has a queen for 2023in a festivity that has been held just six months after the last one, which had to be delayed until June 2022 due to the health emergency, and which has been attended by all the carnival groups and performances by various singers , among which that of the Mexican Carlos Rivera stood out.

Finally, the face-to-face jury was made up of fashion designer Andrés Acosta; the author of the Carnival poster, Nareme Melián; the design specialist, Roberto Siguero; the creative director of Hache TV, Henry Querales; the actress Macarena Gomez; and the choreographer Maite Marcos. Together with them, they have also contributed to the assessment of the singer gisela; journalists Roberto Herrera and Marta Modino; the communicator La Forte; the pilot Christine GZ and the singers Adexe and Nau; in addition to the 10,500 votes of the public, who proclaimed Adriana Peña as queen.

This same jury was in charge of determining the conformation of the court of honor, choosing as Bridesmaids (in this order) Hirisley Jiménez (first), Laura Fernández (second), Carmen Luna Hibner (third) and Marta Santana (fourth).

The Carnival of Tenerife, in New York

The event took off at 9:30 p.m. to New York, an area to which the public accessed through an overture that was attended by staging of various choreographic groups and musical performancesamong which those of the singers Nía, Jadel or the K-Narias stood out, during which various typical scenes of the American city were recreated.

In parallel to this, the queen of Carnival 2022, Ruth González, made her appearance before the public dressed in her fantasy ‘Look at me’, with which she became the winner of the last edition, that of 2022. Welcomed by the music of different groups such as the Afilarmónica Ni Fú-Ni Fá, the Tropicana de Candelaria comparsas —which has obtained the third prize for Interpretation in this edition— and Río Orinoco —second prize for Interpretation— or the rondallas, the candidates for the corona made their appearance divided into four groups.

The emotional component of the evening came with a tribute to the monarchs who had the party chicharrera, on this occasion, in line with the docuseries ‘Tras la máscara’, by Raquel García, about the carnival chicharreras. And there was also room for surprises: the adult murgas, another of the participating groups, carried out a joint performance with the unexpected appearance of Pepe Benavente, which gave way to the subsequent concert by Carlos Rivera.

With this collaboration, the artist is reunited with the Tenerife public, after his visit last year 2021, when he offered a performance without on-site spectators in the same space. The event ended with the sound of ‘Suave’ the song chosen to represent this year’s carnivalsand was directed for the sixth time by Enrique Camacho, and hosted by presenters Alexis Hernández and Laura Afonso.
