In Ant-Man and the Wasp: QuantumaniaMarvel Studios manages to turn one of its perhaps most underrated heroes into the trigger for a new phase of movies and series that promises more complex and unexpected story arcs reminiscent of the fantastic Spider-Man: No way home (2021), with guests —who could arrive in the future— from different places. Fans know very well that with the multiverse and open timelines, any boundaries between movies and series are permanently erased.
But despite being a tape that serves as the cornerstone of many stories to come, Quantumania manages to retain the fun, warmth and simplicity that made us fall in love with Scott Lang’s (Paul Rudd) character in the first place (ant man2015).
Thus, during the first minutes the audience will find a Scott finally relaxed and satisfied with the life he has built after saving the world (as he keeps repeating) with The Avengers (Avengers: Endgame2019).
Although that state of comfort and calm disgusts his now-teenage daughter, Cassie (Kathryn Newton).who has inherited his father’s heroic spirit and seeks his own battles. “Just because something isn’t happening to you doesn’t mean it isn’t happening”exclaims the young woman who also exhibits a great interest in science, causing (as seen in the preview) that his entire family is dragged into the quantum realm, a universe with its own territories and characters.
In his third film, Paul Rudd continues to see being part of Marvel Studios as “unreal”: “There is nothing extraordinary about Scott and I like that about playing him”
Once there, it will be time to the revelations that will come especially from Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), who accidentally spent several decades trapped in that dimension until she was rescued by her family (Ant-Man and the Wasp2018).
And although we always want to be on the hero’s side, the appearance of Kang, the conqueror (the villain of this phase, played by Jonathan Majors) it is hypnotizing. Far from the vociferous frenzy that usually dominates other antagonists, Kang is patient (even cordial) and with the confidence of someone who knows he is extraordinary. Is there anything scarier than that attitude?
The writers of Marvel Studios they have discovered the attraction of their villains and the formula to enhance that darkness.
Scott He will find in his family the strength and his greatest motivation to continue until a curious outcome to which —we are sure— we will want to return several times (and perhaps invite our hero to take another path?). It is the question that Marvel Studios leaves open in his followers who will also be moved by the two post-credit scenes that the 2 hour and 5 minute production brings.
If anything we can anticipate is that there’s a lot, a lot of Kang, with the impressive Jonathan Majors.
