was born on February 2, 1912 in Devon, England. Her parents had already decided to emigrate to the United States. Eliza’s father had family there, and he planned to run a tobacco shop with his cousin. Their fate was decided by chance.

The family was not supposed to sail the ill-fated ship. At the time when it was to set off on its maiden voyage, coal strikes were underway in the UK. In order not to delay the departure of the famous ship, all other White Star Line transatlantic voyages have been delayed. The Dean family was supposed to sail on another ship, but was transferred to the Titanic. Millvina and her brother, Bertram, who is two years older, went to the third grade together with their parents.

The Titanic left Southampton Harbor at noon on April 10, 1912. Just four days later, it struck an iceberg. The ship sank on April 15. Millvina’s mother, Etta, her brother and a 2-month-old baby girl were evacuated in lifeboat number 10. The father, as a third-class passenger, had no chance of survival. He died on board. After leaving the hospital, Etta decided not to stay in the United States. She and her children returned to Great Britain.

Millvina returned to England aboard the RMS Adriatica. It was so popular that a 10-minute limit had to be set for anyone who wanted to hold the 9-week-old baby girl who survived the disaster. The woman never married. She consistently refused to see James Cameron, although she had been a frequent guest at meetings and conventions dedicated to the disaster since the 1990s. The Titanic was a tragedy that destroyed many families. I have lost my father who rests in this wreck. I think it’s disrespectful to make such a tragedy into entertainment, in response to an episode of Doctor Who that referenced a transatlantic liner disaster. At the end of her life, she became seriously ill and began to have problems paying for her stay in a nursing home. She began selling family Titanic memorabilia. A fundraiser was organized and, thanks to donations, from James Cameron, Celine Dion, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio managed to raise the right funds.

Millvina Dean died on May 31, 2009, on the 97th anniversary of the launching of the ship. She was 97 years old. She was the youngest survivor of the disaster, and on the day of her death she was also the last living passenger of the Titanic.
