The Council of Ministers has posthumously granted the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X el Sabio to the filmmaker and creator Carlos Saura, passed away on December 10, for his “indisputable contribution to Spanish culture and art”.
This was announced by the minister spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, at the conference after the Council of Ministers, where she also reported that with this recognition the Government pays Saura a “tribute to his legacy and his work to contribute to the culture of this country”.
Carlos Saura (Huesca, 1932-Madrid, 2023) is the creator of works such as ‘Los golfos’ (1960), ‘La caza’ (1965), ‘Cría Cuervos’ (1975) or ‘Oh, Carmela!’ (1990), among many other tapes with which he achieved a “international recognition” With his work, which won him awards at major international festivals, such as the Golden Bear for Best Film and two Silver Bears for Best Director at the Berlin Festival, or the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Festival, he recalls the Government in a note.
At the same time, “and after hard confrontations with Franco’s censorship”, he also achieved a deserved recognition in Spain. As the Government has described it, Saura is a “universal Aragonese, like his admired friend Luis Buñuel, like his admired Francisco de Goya”, as well as a “total creator and tireless experimenter, his extensive work also includes novels, photographs, operas and theatrical pieces”.
“Leave a universe peopled with strong women and protagonists, because few like him portrayed the female universe so well and so well”. Likewise, the Government has stated that “to review his biography is also to review the history of art of our century. Saura worked with Camarón, with Paco de Lucía, Vittorio Storaro, Rafael Azcona, Daniel Baremboin or Luis Buñuel himself”.
“Spain says goodbye to Carlos Saura, but we have an eternal filmography left, a work to return to and that represents the best of art history and creation in Spain. A story of coherence, freedom, risk and commitment to his country, to the world and to his art”, she concluded.
