For some, cleaning can be therapeutic, while for others it is an overwhelming and tiring activity. However, even if we don’t like cleaning, a mess can significantly worsen our well-being and make everyday functioning difficult. Therapist and author of How to House When You’re Drowning, KC Davis, compiled the “5 things” method that will make cleaning easier and more efficient. What is it about?

Housekeeping has a beneficial effect on the psyche. However, the plan is important

There are many ways to organize cleaning, especially useful for those people who end up just rearranging things and feeling overwhelmed. A great hit was the method of 5 things, invented by a therapist who raises the issue of the impact of the environment on well-being in her work. He argues that controlling chaos can have a beneficial effect on the psyche. Thanks to this, we feel calmer and more willing to spend time at home. KC Davis, however, emphasizes that what our home looks like does not at all reflect what kind of people we are.

What is the 5 things method? Davis says it’s best to divide cleaning into areas

5 things, i.e. five stages of cleaning that will effectively deal with chaos:

  1. Things to throw away
  2. Clothes
  3. Dishes
  4. Things that have their place
  5. Things that have no place

These five categories streamline the entire organizing process and make it faster. How it’s working? First, collect the things to throw away, then get rid of them. Then go through the apartment again, this time collecting only the clothes and shoes, putting them in the cupboards or placing them in the bin (while ignoring everything else). Then put all dirty dishes in the sink or dishwasher. You don’t have to wash them right away, it’s just about placing them. At a later stage, put all the things that have a place where they should be. Then put everything that does not have a designated place. Once the space is clear, you can decide where the items in the last category should go.
