Carlos Saura, in his 10 best films

More than a prolific director, Carlos Saura leaves behind him more than fifty films, but also novels, photography exhibitions and, in general, a lot of art. Precisely art and its relationship with the human being is the central theme of ‘The walls speak’, his latest documentary film that was released just a week ago. Carlos Saura has died at the age of 91 and one day after raising the statuette of the Goya Award of Honor that he was to receive, for a lifetime, more than 60 years, dedicated to the profession.

The truth is that he was not the first ‘stubborn’ he would raise: in the 1990 Goya edition, a much younger Saura but by then the highest authority in Spanish cinema won the award for best director and, along with Rafael Azcona , the one for the best script adapted for its way of taking it to the big screen ‘Ay Carmela!‘, the film adaptation of the play by José Sanchís Sinisterra. This was precisely one of his best works of art, although not the only one, among so many films.

Carlos Saura, in his 10 best films

Ay Carmela’ It is one of his best films, but in terms of awards, it would have to be said that it was his best work: in 1990 it won 13 of the 15 Goya awards for which it was nominated, among them, in addition to the Saura awards (best direction and Best Adapted Screenplay), that of best film, with best editing, artistic direction, production direction, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, sound and special effects. In addition, Carmen Maura took the Goya for best leading actress, Andrés Pajares for best leading actor and Gabino Diego for supporting actor.

However, many other of his tapes won awards for Saura: ‘The hunt’for example, was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 1966 Berlin Film Festival and the Sant Jordi Award for Best Spanish Film in 1967, the same awards that ‘Peppermitn frappé’ won, as well as the Círculo de Film Writers for Best Screenplay. ‘Cousin Angelica’ was the Special Grand Prix of the Jury at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival and the shortlisted film that year to represent Spain at the Oscars, and even the Chicago International Chine Festival gave him an award for her, the Bronze Hugo.

In the last decade, Carlos Saura has received more honorary awards than anything else, although in 2014, when ‘La cousin Angélica’ turned 40, he also received the Biznaga de Oro at the Malaga Festival.
