Basque cinema looks at Seville

Euskaraz irakurri: Euskal zinema, Sevillara begira

Basque cinema is increasingly present at festivals and award ceremonies around the world: Estibaliz Urresola will present “20,000 species of bees”, his first feature film, in the Official Section of the Berlinale; “Irati” won two awards at the Stiges festival; “Suro” and “The Rite of Spring” competed in the Official Section of Zinemaldia; “Tula”, a short film by Beatriz de Silva from Álava, has fallen just one step away from the Oscars; and we all still remember, for example, the ten Goya awards that “Handia” won.

This Saturday, February 11, we will attend and tell another sample of that expansion. The Spanish Film Academy will reward the films of 2022, and Basque cinema will be noticed at the ceremony through various films and film professionals.

The social drama “Cinco lobitos” (Alauda Ruiz de Azua), an audiovisual photograph of provisionality, precariousness and other anxieties of our time, has won eleven nominations, including best film; a very different film, the epic fantasy “Irati”, shot by Paul Urkijo, could win five awards this Saturday night, including best adapted screenplay and best costume design.

Like Alauda Ruiz de Azua, Mikel Gurrea will be at the Goyas with his first feature film, “Suro”, a powerful and profound story shot in Catalonia in Catalan and nominated in two sections, for best new director (Gurrea himself). and for best leading actress (Vicky Luengo).

They also have two nominations for “Unicorn Wars”, an anti-war story then a political animation (Azkoitian Joseba Beristain is nominated for best song), and the Basque production “The Consecration of Spring”, which has brought Telmo Irureta from Zumaia the nomination for Best New Actor.

They share a nomination, for their part, “Don’t look into the eyes”, directed by Félix Viscarret from Navarre; the short documentary “Maldita: A love song to Sarajevo”, a letter of love and gratitude to the difference; the award-winning short film by Estibaliz Urresola “Cuerdas”; the animated short “Loop”; and the documentary “Labordeta, a man without more”, by Gaizka Urresti.

Animation

In the Best Animated Film section, three of the five nominees are Basque productions: the honest anti-war plea “Unicorn Wars”, the second installment of the “Black Is Beltza” saga, a political adventure film with the label of Fermin Muguruza, and “Inspector Sun and the curse of the black widow”, by Julio Soto Gurpide.

In addition, beyond the Basque productions, several Basque professionals are nominated for the Goya. This is the case of the producer Ibon Cormenzana and the sound engineer Aitor Berenguer for “As bestas” (the brilliant film by Rodrigo Sorogoyen is the main favorite of the night with 17 nominations), and the orchestra director Fernando Velázquez, author of the music for the movie “The crooked lines of God”.

For his part, the veteran actor from Bilbao Ramón Barea participates in three nominated works. His performance in “Cinco lobitos” has given him his first Goya nomination, as a supporting actor, he participates as a narrator in “Unicorn Wars” and is the protagonist of the fictional short film “La entrega”.

On Saturday we will find out who wins the Goya awards at a gala that will begin at 10:00 p.m. The most nominated films are “As bestas” (17), “Modelo 77” (16), “Alcarrás” (11) and “Cinco lobitos” (11).

*EITB participates in the films “Cinco lobitos”, “Irati”, “Suro”, “Unicorn Wars”, “The Rite of Spring”, “Ropes” and “Black Is Beltza 2: Ainhoa”.
