Actor Alec Baldwin is facing involuntary murder charges for firing the gun that killed the film’s cinematographer. Rust Halyna Hutchins (of which he is also a producer). Now the magazine People reports New Mexico prosecutors are alleging that the actor did not complete on-set weapons trainingbefore the incident.
In a report written by investigating officer Robert Shilling of the district attorney’s office, it is stated that Baldwin “was not present for required weapons training prior to the start of filming”. He also reveals that in an interview with Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the gunsmith who is also accused of involuntary murder, it is stated that Baldwin had “limited instruction on firearms and how to check them to see if they were loaded or not.”
In the documents, Gutiérrez-Reed confessed that Baldwin attended a 30-minute training session. However, he was distracted by his phone during that time.
Hutchins died on the recording set of Rust on October 21, 2021, after a prop gun in Baldwin’s hands was fired. The weapon was not supposed to have live ammunition. Director Joel Souza was wounded, but not fatally. On January 19, the prosecution announced that the charges against Baldwin and Gutiérrez Reed would be involuntary murder.
If they are convicted of that crime, the sentence could be up to 5 years in prison. Prosecutors have not mentioned charges for Souza’s injuries.
During a 2022 interview with ABC News host George Stephanopoulos, Baldwin said he hadn’t pulled the triggerand that he doesn’t know how to shoot a real gun.
In recent weeks, the actor has been focused on asking people on Instagram to help his wife reach a million followers.
Halyna Hutchins’ widower, Matthew, settled with Rust’s producers, including Baldwin, over the wrongful-death lawsuit he had filed. That created the opportunity for resume shooting the film in January this yearwith Matthew as producer.
