The accumulation of smegma on the penis is one of the main causes of bad odors in the male reproductive system. It is a substance with a texture similar to that of cottage cheese, which is secreted by glands located in the balanopreputial groove, located in the space between the crown of the glans penis and the prepuce, the skin that covers the head of the penis. It is also present in the vagina.
In men, smegma performs functions of lubricating the skin of the glans, with the aim of preserving the sensitivity of the glans, according to César Merino, a urologist. However, this substance is not present in people with circumcised penises: that is, people whose foreskins were surgically removed. Circumcised men only present little humidity, since the glands responsible for producing smegma are directly exposed to underwear.

Although its secretion is natural and fulfills biological functions, since it is a mixture of cells and dead skin, smegma is conducive to promoting the development of bacteria, and therefore tends to cause bad odors.
For Merino, the climate of Guayaquil affects the secretion of smegma, since humidity is a key factor. However, there is no condition that increases the secretion of smegma. The only reason smegma could be bothersome, Merino says, is because of a lack of grooming. For this reason, he exposes him, it is essential to carry out effective personal hygiene. If the smegma is not removed, its buildup can lead to irritation and infection of the glans.
“Cleaning the skin of the foreskin is extremely important,” says Merino. “Some people say you have to circumcise to avoid infection, but no, you have to learn how to get the skin off your penis and clean it regularly with soap and water.” In addition to soap and water, Merino also recommends taking a bath in the morning, before the workday.
These are the three female sexual myths that you should no longer believe according to science
Although the smegma works to maintain the sensitivity of the glans penis and keep its skin smooth, which helps during penetration and prevents friction cuts, Merino does not recommend having sex with smegma. During oral sex, for example, bad odors can cause repulsion in the couple. In addition, he adds, “to have sexual relations it is essential that we do not have smegma, as it can be a source of contamination for our partner.”
The smegma usually has a whitish coloration and a “slightly lumpy texture,” but if the discharge discolors yellow or brown and changes to a chewy texture, it means the smegma is infected with harmful bacteria, Merino says. In such cases, sexual intercourse should be avoided and urine tests and semen cultures performed.
