in “Foster Family” she played Aunt Ula, Anka’s sister played by the late Gabriela Kownacka. Her character Urszula led a military career and had a high-level position, but she often visited relatives and cracked jokes.
“Any fool can do that.” Maryla Rodowicz’s joke with Maryla Rodowicz
The writers of the series took the opportunity and included a scene in one of the episodes in which Ula speaks very unflatteringly about Maryla Rodowicz. Which means the singer was mocking herself. And how did it happen?
In the 18th episode entitled “Press spokesman” Majka, the eldest daughter of the Kwiatkowskis, as a teenager, dreams of a career as a singer. She is most impressed, of course, by Maryla Rodowicz, and her siblings support her the most when, with a guitar in her hands, she starts to move her lips to the song “Do tear tears”. At this party, the kids are covered by aunt Ula, who enters the room with a bunch of grapes. He asks what’s going on, and when he hears the name Rodowicz, he says:
I don’t like her songs at all. Kind of pointless. Who needs it: that she’s a green stone, can’t get off the train – I don’t understand anything.
He also adds:
Any fool can scream like her.
As proof, he also sings a line from “Hey, falcons”. And when the kids tell her she has talent, she says quite condescendingly, “I only have developed lungs.” And adds at the very output:
You won’t convince me of that, God forbid, of singing, and certainly not of Rodowicz.
“Foster Family” was one of the longest-running Polish series. It debuted on Polsat in 1999, and left the air after eighteen series and 329 episodes in December 2009. In the opening credits and in the credits, viewers could hear fragments of the song “Tkanina”, the text of which was created by Jacek Cygan, and Seweryn Krajewski, who also sings, was responsible for the composition.
The plot focused on the vicissitudes of the Kwiatkowski family from Warsaw. The action begins with the fact that Anka (Gabriela Kownacka) and Jacek (Piotr Fronczewski) – the parents of a teenage Majka (Monika Mrozowska) and still little Filip (Sergiusz Żymełka) – want to adopt Romek, a boy from an orphanage, at the instigation of their youngest son. By accident, Zosia (Misheel Jargalsaikhan) and Eliza (Aleksandra Szwed) also end up under their roof.
When it turns out that their city apartment is a bit too small to accommodate five children, two adults and a dog Bib, Jack meets a client who proposes that they exchange houses with her. The old lady lived alone in a house outside the city, so the exchange was also beneficial for her. Near the city, the Kwiatkowskis meet their characterful neighbors, Jędrula (Tomasz Dedek) and Alutka (Joanna Trzepiecińska), and the friendly constable (Jarosław Boberek) is also a frequent guest.
The role of aunt Ula was not a screen debut for Maryla Rodowicz. In 1968, the singer appeared in the production of “Sleigh Ride”, and in 1988 she also played in “Mr. Kleks in Space” – she played the role of Linella, the wife of Governor Karmello. In 1995, she also played in “The History of Master Twardowski” – there she played the role of Agnieszka, Twardowski’s wife.
Although she spent many years on the set of “Foster Family”, in one of the interviews in 2012 she admitted that acting was not her dream profession. She emphasized that on the set she met “fantastic people and great actors”. “It was an honor to play with the master Piotr Frączewski or Hanna Śleszyńska. The stars of Polish acting were there, and there was a great script. Well written and funny” – she noted and categorically stated:
The adventure with acting in my case ended for good. When I started, everything gave me trouble: dialogue with a partner, performing simple actions. And although I’ve learned a lot over these 11 years, working on the show is pretty monotonous for me. This constant repetition, the same interiors
– she told in an interview with “”. She also explained: “Besides, you have to wait your turn all the time. For me, it was a bit of a waste of precious time, especially since I was playing a lot of concerts at the same time.”
