That appearances are deceptive is well known in Madrid Spanish Theaterwhich hosts the representation of ‘The importance of being called Ernesto‘. A critique of social hypocrisy written by the Irish playwright Oscar Wilde and this time directed by David Selvas.
Who would have told Wilde, almost 130 years after writing it, that his work would have a retro pop point and even music, because it is not a musical but a work in which all the characters sing and even play instruments.
This production -presented in Barcelona in 2018 and translated for the first time into Spanish by Cristina Genebat- can be enjoyed until February 19. The actors Pablo Rivero and María Pujalte star in it, accompanied by Paula Malia, Ferran Vilajosana, Paula Jornet, Albert Triola and Gemma Brió.
Originally released in 1895, only three months later its author saw his career ruined with a two-year prison sentence that accused him of indecency for his private life. The writer had often denounced the hypocrisy of an increasingly conservative societyay controlling over the privacy of its citizens.
This hypocrisy, in a premonitory way, affects the protagonist of this work about the love affairs of two young british men and their secret double liveswhich anticipates some of the main vanguards of the 20th century.
The play features Jose Novoa in the design of the stage space, which Selvas has described as “a surprise set design.” Meanwhile, the lighting design is by Mingo Albir, the sound design is by Lucas Ariel Vallejos, the costume design by Maria Armengol, the characterization by Paula Ayuso, the choreography and movement by Pere Faura, and the musical direction by Pere Jou and Aurora Bauzà (Telemann Rec).
The staging by David Selvas has received the Best Show Award at the Barcelona Theater Awards, in addition to the Revelation Awards, which went to the actress Paula Jornet, who in her facet as a composer was also recognized with the Critics Award and the Butaca 2018 Award for Best Original Music.
