“Third World is more active than ever,” says Felipe Jácome, vocalist of the Quito band

More than 30 years ago, Felipe, Juan Manuel and Daniel Jácome combined their musical talents to form the Quito rock band Tercer Mundo. Felipe, lead singer and guitarist of the long-lived group, says he never imagined that they would continue playing decades later.

When they started, he explains, they were a little dizzy from the fame that a successful young musical project attracts, however, their perspective mutated over time: “Neither fame nor fortune, it’s not that way”, Philip reflects. “As long as that is the perspective, beyond fame and fortune, we can dedicate ourselves to this long”.

Contrary to what the public would think, Felipe explains, Third World is more active than ever. They recently re-released their song Do not leave me, in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of its launch. They played live for the last time in December 2022, for the Quito parties. They have planned a remake of the song I miss you a littlecomposed by Sergio Sacoto for the album ‘Your mother’, originally released in 1998.

In addition, the emotion of going on stage feels “the same” for Felipe: “One would think that over the years you already know how people are going to react, you know what is going to happen and you lose that mystique from the beginning, but nothing to do with it. It’s the same, first with the nerves, they are like at the beginning… the thriller it’s there, intact”.

The trajectory of Tercer Mundo, says Felipe, has been marked by the affection of its fans and the emotion that the audience continues to feel in its live performances. For Felipe, a band can promote a song all they want, but the real challenge is facing the crowd when it’s played live.. “The fact that people go to a concert and sing the songs from the moment you play the first chord on the guitar is crazy,” explains the lead singer from Third World.

The dynamics of a band made up of three brothers has been positive in the sense of how they complement each other artistically. Apart from their roles when they go on stage (Daniel is in charge of the drums and vocals, and Juan Manuel of the keyboard, guitar, and vocals), the three brothers carry out promotional work, relations with the public, and music production. However, Felipe emphasizes, it is important for the band to “learn to conjugate” the different directions that each member wants to take with the musical project.

“Juan Manuel is the one who is dedicated to technology, he does the recording, mixing and mastering. Daniel is the one who makes the big administrative decisions,” says Felipe. “I play the role of public relations: I go to the concert and stand in front and manage the relationship with the public, and with the media in general. So we have put together a little machine”.

Despite the fact that Ecuadorian rock bands already had their golden age of popularity in the 80s and 80s, the rock as a genre it “crosses” other types of music in the form of fusions with other more commercially accepted genres. Rock is now a niche business, explains Felipe: “We have an audience that does catch us, they are connected to us and they respond to concerts and new releases. It’s all about niches. We try to cultivate and build that niche that corresponds to us”.
