Documentary ‘Libre’ narrates how ‘Zuko’ Carrasco, a former mountain climber now a quadriplegic, climbed the Cayambe volcano

The film premiered yesterday in the Multicines of the CC Scala Shopping (Quito) and will remain on the billboard today, Wednesday and tomorrow, Thursday.

Free is the documentary that recounts the most recent feat of Sebastián Zuko Carrasco: crown the summit of the Cayambe volcano (5,790 meters) and descend using a paraglider and under your own power, without any assistance during the flight.

Zuko is a retired international mountain guide. An accident in 2015 forced him to continue his life in a wheelchair due to a serious injury to his cervical region. Clinically, Zuko is considered a quadriplegic, as he lost mobility in his legs and was unable to regain 100% strength in his arms. However, this never stopped him.

Free recounts how on April 22, 2021, Zuko, together with a great human team, would manage to crown the summit of a snow-capped volcano. “More than 1,000 meters of positive elevation gain and about 5 kilometers of travel over 4,800 meters above sea level were some of the obstacles that Zuko and his team would have to overcome to reach their goal,” indicates a bulletin.

The ascent took 2 nights and 3 days, and the human team that assisted Zuko in this feat was made up of 14 mountaineers and specialized high mountain guides, including Paúl Guerra, Gaspar Navarrete, Pablo Silva, David Silva, Rafael Cáceres, Francisco Arroba, Karl Egloff, Gustavo Cevallos, Alejandro Lazatti, Mateo Madriñán, Fátima Serrano, Florencia Córdova, Jack Bermeo and Julián Portilla.

“The documentary tells an extraordinary story of friendship and improvement, where the ingenuity and courage of Zuko and his team put themselves ahead of adversity and fulfill their goal of reaching the summit of this snowy mountain. For Zuko This feat broke down barriers, showing that the society in which we live can be inclusive, providing opportunities and tools for everyone regardless of their condition ”, mentions the same source.

The film premiered yesterday in Multicines of the CC Scala Shopping (Quito) and will remain on the billboard today Wednesday and tomorrow Thursday. In the future it is planned to present it also in Guayaquil.
