“We got a little choked.” The judges of “The Voice Senior” were surprised by the participant’s story

In the final episode of the blind auditions in the fourth edition of “The Voice Senior” many talented participants appeared, but Masio Sylwester Kwiek caught the most attention, who shared his special story with the coaches. The man is a descendant of the last Roma king.

The participant of “The Voice Senior” is the grandson of the Roma king

The participant’s grandfather was Janusz I Kwiek, whose election and coronation took place on July 4, 1937 at the Polish Army stadium in Warsaw. The last Roma king looked very dignified during the ceremony. He was equipped with a crown, a scepter and a mantle decorated with ermine. The election of the new king of the Roma in Poland and neighboring countries was such an important event that it was even broadcast on the radio, and the press throughout the country described this historical circumstance.

Masio Sylwester Kwiek told the coaches that it was the last such coronation in Poland. He also shared his childhood memories in the Roma community:

I grew up in a camp from a small child. My parents come from different Roma tribes. My mother was from Polska Roma and my father was from the Kelderary tribe. Until the age of 20, I traveled all over Poland in a caravan, only one summer with my father’s family, and the other with my mother’s family. There is a patriarchal system in the caravan, i.e. the father is the head of the family, and the old gypsies decide the fate of the whole caravan. We didn’t have a chance to go to a regular school because the rolling stock was in constant motion. It wasn’t until I was an adult, when I could make my own decisions about my life, that I started to learn

The participant’s story aroused great emotions among the trainers of the program. Surprise did not leave their faces, and Alicja Węgorzewska decided to comment: “Fascinating! We were slightly choked.” Interestingly, this was not Masio Sylwester Kwiek’s first performance in front of a large audience.

The man made his debut with the band Chochoły during the 2nd National Festival of Polish Song in Opole. It was with this group that he made his first phonographic recordings. In 1964, he became involved with the Roma band Terno, and briefly collaborated with the Polanie group. In 1978, he parted ways with the band Terno and, together with his wife Raida and children, he left permanently for Sweden, where he founded the Gypsy Music Association Romska Musiksallskapet.
