Ecuadorian singer R. Cela (Raúl Cela) begins 2023 with several musical projects that he wants to share with his Ecuadorian and world followers. In the midst of the global effervescence that surrounds the urban genre, Cela assures that he will continue making music for many more years, since composing and creating new songs is as natural to him as breathing.
With 27 years of experience, what surprises does it bring us for this 2023?
We have a lot of music, many projects. I came to Ecuador because I haven’t been here for two years and we recorded three videos: I want to dance, A dollar and And if we go which is the last one I’m promoting. Everything is also ready to promote what I call ‘a work of art’ and it is a social song, accompanied by a video called the hangover.
When can we enjoy this new theme and what does it talk about?
Everything is ready for its launch in February and we are going to raise awareness throughout the world with a solid message of responsibility because we are going through very difficult times. And I’m very excited about it. The video is like a short film because it lasts 7 minutes and actors and actresses from the medium will participate telling a bit of their story in the song.
What expectations do you have of this project?
We are going to do everything we can so that this message that we bring reaches everyone, because It’s a conscience rap and I think it’s going to touch hearts.
Being one of the first Ecuadorian exponents of the urban genre, how do you see the recent and global growth of this rhythm?
It is a bit ironic, because although it is true, the various platforms allow you to be anywhere on the planet so quickly, I also believe that there has been a musical regression because today musical productions work very quickly, everything is summed up in a cell phone. People are not caring much about the sound quality, but more about how fast I do the work so that it reaches more people. So there are good things on the one hand and on the other hand it is not very encouraging.
And which artists are part of your playlists today?
I am a person who grew up with rap, I listen to the classics of the genre like The Fat Boys, I danced breakdancing, and I listen to them to this day. And I also like Ricardo Arjona even though he’s not from rap or hip hop, I like listening to him because in my music I try to merge many concepts. I like cumbia, merengue, I try to be very musical, but when I want to be quite lyrical, I am too.
And of the current artists, the time he was able to work with Don Omar, seems to me the best performer in urban music, I learned a lot from him. The voice color of farruko It is also very special Chencho & Maldy I like them too, although I don’t connect much with some of their lyrics.
From your experience in the international arena, what advice would you give to new local artists who are now also looking for an opportunity to project themselves?
If the new musical school tries to take advantage of the immediacy in which we live so that their songs reach the world, it is a very good thing, but they should not neglect musical quality. That they always try to surround themselves with people who know what they are doing, with good musicians, who are not satisfied with sounding, but that your project is good and work everything professionally.
