The drama is based on real events from World War II, and its main character is the titular Oscar Schindler. He is a German industrialist who, observing the tragedy of the Jews in the Kraków ghetto, decided to save as many lives as possible. When he heard that death awaited those unable to work in the camp, he bought them out and employed them in his thriving factory of enamelware. Ultimately, Schindler managed to save over a thousand people.

One of the film’s most haunting scenes is the one where we see a little girl in a red coat. She wanders around the ghetto during its liquidation. She is also seen by Oscar Schindler, who decides that he will do everything to protect those sentenced to death.

Spielberg himself emphasized in interviews that the scene was for him a metaphor for the world’s reaction to the Holocaust. The director claims that everyone was aware of the Holocaust of the Jews, but did not do enough to prevent it.

The girl in the red coat was played by three-year-old Oliwia Dąbrowska. Spielberg asked her not to see the film until she was 18. Dąbrowska broke her word after eight years. She watched “Schindler’s List” as an 11-year-old, but later admitted that it was a mistake.

At the age of 18, she actually matured to the content presented on the screen and was already able to process difficult emotions on her own. In one of the interviews quoted by the Ranker portal, she admitted that “Spielberg was right”, and she had to grow up with the film to fully understand it.
