Sharp quarrel between the headmaster and the student in “Question for Breakfast”. “Students provoke teachers”

In the episode “Questions for Breakfast” from January 21, 2023, a topic was raised referring to the recent, shocking case from the United States, where a teacher committed physical violence against a student. The hosts decided to talk to the guests about the issue of violence in Polish schools. However, the topic was downplayed by one of the invited people.

“Students often provoke teachers”

The program featured a lawyer, a high school graduate and the director of one of the Polish institutions, Primary School No. 26 in Warsaw. Referring to a recording in which a teacher from one school in Texas pushes and tugs one of his charges in front of the other students, the first of the guests informed what the legal consequences of such behavior may be.

Violation of bodily integrity is always wrong and should not be done. The teacher bears responsibility from the teacher card, even with the possibility of expulsion from the profession. Hitting a student is such a big disciplinary offense that I cannot imagine that such a teacher could work in a school after such a situation.

– he said. However, the headmaster decided that no one in Polish schools would have to deal with similar consequences, because the discussed problem did not concern our country. In his opinion, if there is violent behavior in schools, it is not the teachers, but the students who tend to be aggressive.

Students often provoke teachers. In other words, psychological aggression. Children have different ideas, they use the teacher’s impotence, maybe the lack of pedagogical competence. Let us remember that students today forget about their responsibilities, and the main emphasis is placed on student rights.

– he justified the education workers. He added that today “a teacher is put against the wall by a student and a parent”, he must have a “strong mentality not to be provoked”, and “unprovoked will not behave in an aggressive and unacceptable way”. Not only the lawyer, but also the host of the program, Tomasz Kammel, disagreed with his words.

This year’s graduate is of the opposite opinion

The director’s words also met with the immediate reaction of Julia, a high school graduate. The girl admitted that although she encountered aggression from students, it was largely due to the teachers’ inappropriate approach to their charges. Together with Kammel and the invited lawyer, she decided that psychological violence is the everyday practice in Poland.

Of course, only teachers do something wrong in school. The students are perfect and everything is fine […] You graduated anyway. So what? Those bad teachers didn’t teach you?

– the director laughed at their position and turned to the high school graduate with irony. She confidently denied it, informing that tutoring had prepared her for her final exams. This ended the stormy exchange of views, although it is impossible to ignore the reaction of the student when the headmaster shared the views of the Minister of Education Przemysław Czarnek, according to whom schools should be introduced to the discipline in force in the People’s Republic of Poland. Her gaze was quite eloquent at the time. Viewers were also asked about the breakfast on the official Facebook page. The vast majority of commentators point out that violence by teachers is a real problem in Poland. You can read them below and listen to the full interview
