Guayaquil will be able to see, hear and breathe Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh died poor, depressed, and convinced that his entire life had been a failure. His art never achieved the recognition it deserved while he breathed. The painter would never have imagined that, centuries later, people would pay to be consumed by his art and to walk in it; and not only in his work, but in his very life.

All this will be possible in Van Gogh Alive, an immersive exhibition of more than 200 works by the painter, which will move from Quito to Guayaquil as of February 2, 2023. It will be located on the Malecón Simón Bolívar, near the Hemiciclo de la Rotonda; It will consist of seven 700 m² interactive rooms and one 500 m² immersive room, where projections of Van Gogh’s work will be combined with music and narrations of the painter’s life by live guides and video actors. Nicolás Romero Ordeñana, director of Arriba el Telón (AET), the company that organizes the exhibition in Quito and Guayaquil, expects the exhibition to be open for 90 days.

The immersive Van Gogh exhibition will be in Guayaquil

In the exhibition rooms you can walk in recreations of Van Gogh’s work, such as his famous paintings Arles bedroomportrait of his room in Arles (France), and The starry Night. It will also have play areas for children.

Until now, Guayaquil will be the last city in the country to host the sample, according to Hernán Ganchegui, producer of AET Latin America. The exhibition will admit 45 people per tour, to ensure an enjoyable experience for the public, according to the organizers. The sample in Quito, as a reference, has the capacity to receive approximately 2,500 to 3,000 people per day.

According to the organizers, Van Gogh Alive It will represent a great cultural opportunity for the Guayaquil public, since it is difficult for the average citizen to have access to Van Gogh’s work. Ganchegui highlights that it will be important for people “who have never attended a museum or an exhibition, especially children.”

Doménica Gómez from Guayaquil attended the exhibition in Quito last week. She found it an “incredible” experience, especially because of the interactive element of it. She highlighted the room of sunflowers, a room whose walls are full of sunflowers on the floor, walls and ceiling. She also enjoyed the immersive room with music and projections of Van Gogh’s works.
