“Eternals” leads the US box office despite criticism

Marvel’s new superhero movie, “Eternals,” grossed about $ 71 million this weekend.

Marvel’s new superhero movie, “Eternals,” grossed about $ 71 million this weekend, topping the North American box office, according to preliminary estimates from trade company Exhibitor Relations released Sunday.

It’s a strong start to the pandemic era for the Angelina Jolie-starring Salma Hayek, albeit a bit below expectations.

Written and directed by Chloe Zhao, who won a Best Director Oscar for “Nomadland,” the film faced some of the worst reviews of any Marvel movie, but it has done well abroad, where it grossed the impressive sum of 91 million dollars.

With a cast that also includes Richard Madden and Gemma Chan, “Eternals” tells the story of an immortal race of aliens who emerge after several millennia in hiding to save Earth from the evil Deviants.

“Duna,” which last week topped the box office, fell to a very distant second place, with a gross of $ 7.6 million.

The Warner Bros. sci-fi thriller, based on the Frank Herbert classic, stars Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya and Oscar Isaac.

“Dune” tells the story of a family in the distant future struggling to survive on a desert planet plagued by monstrous sandworms, but also a valuable resource called a spice.

United Artist’s James Bond film “No Time to Die” again took third place, with $ 6.2 million.

The film will be offered on digital platforms starting Tuesday, a quick change after its release on October 8.

Sony’s superhero movie “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” moved up one spot this weekend to fourth with $ 4.5 million.

Its total in North America is now approaching $ 200 million.

In fifth place was the 20th Century computer-animated sci-fi comedy “Ron’s Gone Wrong,” with $ 3.6 million. His voice cast includes Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, and Olivia Colman.
