60 years ago, in August 1962, a peculiar spider bit Peter Parker, a New York high school student who suffered from bullying. Since then, the character created by Stan Lee and illustrated by Stan Ditko has given birth to a multi-billion dollar media empire, spanning comics, movies, video games, merchandising and amusement parks.
The story of Peter Parker represented an irruption in the American comics market: until then, the stereotypical hero was muscular and without complicated moral decisions to make; they were generally mature adults.
Spiderman, on the other hand, was a child when he received his powers, and some of his decisions reflect his immaturity. The break that Spiderman represented with the other stories of the time was a reflection of the situation that the publication was experiencing. Amazing Fantasy, that Lee and Ditko were directing, because they were so desperate that they decided to cast an experimental character.
Spiderman comic book page auctioned for $3.36 million; a record that makes him the most powerful superhero at auction
Lee convinced the heads of Marvel to publish the first volume of Spider-Man in the latest issue of amazing fantasy, publication that had already been cancelled. The growing demand for comics by the American teenage public dictated the almost immediate popularity of Spider-Man.
Another reason for Spider-Man’s popularity is the psychological aspect that Lee and Ditko promoted when devising the character: Peter Parker is a normal person, with mundane problems, which intersect with the extraordinary second life he lives. Also, according to Lee, Ditko made the decision to design Spider-Man’s suit to cover him from head to toe so that readers can imagine themselves as the hero.
Despite his popularity, curiously, Spider-Man did not appear on the big screen until 2002, with the famous interpretation of director Sam Raimi, which began the trilogy of films that culminated in spider-man 3 in 2007. More recently, Spider-Man was on the big screen in Spider-Man: No Way Homewhich brought together the three actors who have played the superhero on the big screen: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland.
