For the first time, a team of 18 professional photographers, endorsed by the Association of Ecuadorian Photographers (AFE), represents Ecuador in the World Photographic Cup 2023 (WPC).
Ecuador participates with 24 photographs, in eight categories: nature and landscape, nature and wildlife, natural portrait, digital portrait, weddings, commercial, digital art and documentary (photojournalism).
World Photographic Cup 2023 (WPC) is an international competition that was born in 2013, organized by the Federation of European Photographers and the Association of Professional Photographers of America. In this tenth edition, it qualified 32 countries, including Ecuador.
The 18 selected Ecuadorian photographers: Lorena Cordero, Romina Córdova, Adrián Soria, Álex Escobar, Alexis Zurita, Andrés Jiménez, Diego Bermeo, John Bautista, Jonathan Terreros, Juan Pablo Merchán, Juan Pablo Velasco, Lucas Bustamante, Mario Cornejo, Raúl Yépez Collantes , Santiago Fernández, Sebastián Rodríguez, Simón Brauer and Vicente Gaibor, they belong to several provinces of the country, such as Guayas, Pichincha, El Oro, Tungurahua, Imbabura, Galapagos and Azuay.
Ecuador and Brazil are the only countries representing South America, who will compete with Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Guatemala, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Pakistan, Portugal, the Philippines, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The judging of the 2023 Photography World Cup will be carried out, online, by a panel made up of a judge from each participating country. Through a software specialized, the jury will assign a score to each image, considering the impact, vision, composition and technique. At the end of the evaluation, the software select the best ten photographs in each category and the best photograph of each country.
Pamela Corrales, documentary photographer, was accepted as a jury and curator for the evaluation phase of the WFC 2023, but she will not judge the 24 photographs that participate for Ecuador.
A qualifying jury, during the months of November and December, will choose the winning photographs. The photos that are finalists, in the eight categories, will be announced at the Imagic USA event, in January 2023, and the award ceremony will be on March 17, in Singapore.
Each category is awarded with a gold, silver and bronze medal. The country with the highest score wins the World Photographic Cup 2023.
“We know that there are very important worldwide contests such as the World Press Photo and the Pulitzer Prizes that recognize individuals, but the World Cup of Photography is the only international event that invites the representation of a country, so for us it is very important”, concludes Karla Martínez, from the board of the Association of Ecuadorian Photographers.
