* This report was made days before the announcement of the curfew and state of emergency in Guayaquil. This event, originally scheduled for 20:00, will start Friday at 6:45 p.m., tickets are $15.
That Guayaquil has a constant cultural exchange with Spain and its exponents of flamenco is one of the objectives with which The GYE Flamenca group was born in 2021by the hand of the also Ecuadorian bailaora Camila Valdiviezo and the guitarist Santiago Cardenasalso based today in our country.
“In Guayaquil there is so much love for flamenco, as well as academies, schools and companies that offer a lot of openness to be able to practice this dance (…) As well as All the capitals of the world have their flamenco tablao and their flamenco offer with live music, why doesn’t Guayaquil have it constantly?”, reflects Camila, who last year led a six-week season linked to this artistic expression.
What were the objectives for this 2022?
This year we said let’s redouble the bet and, instead of doing six weeks, let’s do six months of activities, for this reason, this season began on June 14 and will end on December 14.
What activities have you done so far?
We do a small collaboration with the Sanchez Aguilar Theater and we did flamenco tablados in their outdoor space and we were also in Las Tablas (Salado boardwalk). In addition, in July we had the first retreat to the beach with flamenco content, there were three days in San José (Santa Elena) and we are going to do the second on November 18, 19 and 20.
What will your next performance be?
Our next performance open to the public is the tablado on Friday, November 11 in the Las Peñas neighborhood, which is like a milestone for me to be able to enter that cultural scenewith the importance of both that area and the Casa Cino Fabiani.
What do you have prepared for Casa Cino Fabiani?
It is a very special setting with a lot of mystique, In fact, the stage will be in front of a large rock that they have exposed there on the Santa Ana hill and we are going to offer a flamenco stage in the Andalusian style, just as if the public were in Spain. will participate guitarist Santiago Cardenas, who was trained in the United States and Spain and who lives in our country. Will be Alexis Elmenderí, a French singerbased in Spain and who is visiting Ecuador and Renata Ruiz, who is our guest dancer and lives and works flamenco in Seville and He comes from a tour of Mexico, France and now he is coming to Guayaquil. Besides me, who also dances.
Together we will offer one hour of flamenco with live music. There will be approximately six styles of flamenco that we will be able to enjoy in 60 minutes with an intermission of between 10 and 15 minutes to also enjoy the tapas and drinks offered by Casa Cino Fabiani.
How do you feel that the flamenco fan audience has been growing?
We have strengthened that public faithful to flamenco that has repeated tablaos and we like that very much, having that loyal audience that was eager to have a lot of flamenco in Guayaquil and on the other hand, each time we find a new audience that was also something very important to us. For example, this year one of our objectives was to reach older adults and that they can enjoy a quality proposal and we were able to do it thanks to the Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo with the UEES Flamenca initiative (…) and also with other activities, it gave us a great boost to achieve new audiences in boys who study other arts and who had no approach to flamenco.
What are your next steps?
My goal would now be to reach another audience, young children, in their early childhood, that is, between 1 and 4 years old, in sessions of cognitive stimulation with flamenco. And we also plan to travel to Esmeraldas and Quito.
What elements of flamenco do you invite people to appreciate in each presentation?
Something that I think encompasses everything is that it is appreciated the communication that exists between the musicians and the bailaoras in flamenco. That intimacy that is created in the cast is very important, the connection between the four of us, in this case, that we are going to be on stage that day. So, enjoying the complicity and how we manage this unspoken language to be able to amalgamate and make a very lively synchronicity feel, also because in flamenco there are important elements of improvisation.
Then I really like that people can notice the nuances that flamenco hasIn other words, not everything is deep, deep, dark or intimate, but neither is everything joyful and merriment, nor is everything strength, that is, there are moments of the dance full of delicacy and very subtle movements, and then, moments of a bit of bodily flirtation (pinching), while a lot of energy emanates from the finishing touches of the dances. So a very dynamic environment is created, where nothing is flat, but rather it goes through many stages and through different dynamics, types of energy.
And finally it would be nice internalize the musical language, pay attention to the specific techniques that flamenco requires for the guitar, For example, that it is different from the electric guitar or the classical guitar. There is also strength in the voice, in the cante, noticing that flamenco moan that sometimes we think we don’t understand the lyrics, but they are phrases and words that stretch out and are directed according to the feeling and intention that the cantaor wants to give.
