Accompanying the arrival of spring, starting at 3:30 p.m., there will be maskaradas in Atharratze (January 22), Pagola (January 29), Mendikota (February 5), Gamere (Saturday, February 11), Ürrüstoi (February 19), Altzürükü (Saturday, February 25), Muskildi (Saturday, March 4), Idauze Mendi (Saturday, March 11), Zalgize (March 19), Urdiñarbe (March 26), Larraine ( April 2), Barkoxe (April 9), Sohüta (April 16) and again in Maule on April 22.
The maskarada combines text and dance, and presents two groups: the reds, including the gathuzain or the skilful dancer zamalzain, and the blacks, wilder and tougher. It consists of three acts: barrikaden haustea, ofizioak and jolasak. There will be 30 participants, of which the vast majority are Basque.
This year the maskarada will bring as a novelty the end of the buhames characterssince they understand that the role they are given is racist.
