The UN contemplates that autonomous vehicles can travel at 130 km/h on the highway

UN experts in autonomous driving meeting these days in Geneva approved this Wednesday a modification in the regulations to regulate this future transport that extends its maximum speed from 60 kilometers per hour to 130 “under certain conditions”, in principle similar to those of the freeways.

The proposal, for passenger and light cargo vehicles, was adopted today at the World Forum for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations that is being held in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), as indicated by this agency in a statement.

In addition to the increase in maximum speed, the so-called Regulation 157 includes the authorization that these vehicles can change lanes, and would enter into force on January 1, 2023 in countries that decide to adopt it, UNECE said.

These provisions would only apply to roads that cannot be accessed by pedestrians or cyclists, with physical separation between the two directions, and in autonomous driving systems in which the driver can take control of the vehicle at all times (autonomous level vehicles). 3).

Adopting these regulations would entail obligations for vehicle manufacturers in countries where autonomous driving is permitted in the future, including having a circulation data collection system similar to the “black boxes” of airplanes. (YO)
