Guilt, responsibility and impulses?: the play ‘Las irresponsables’ comically questions these themes from the stage of La Bota

There is nothing strange when three friends decide to vacation for a weekend out of town. However, what would happen if they left their restrictions behind and let themselves be carried away by their impulses? Director Augusto Enriquez explore this idea at the hands of three well-known actresses: Mirian Murillo, Martha Ontaneda Y Elvira Carbowho will portray characters with whom the public will be able to identify with laughter.

With more than seven months preparing to go on stage, “the idea of the irresponsible it came from Martha. She had asked me to do a play and we had seen various options, and we didn’t like any of them”, says Murillo. “Until she wrote to Xavier Daulte and he answered yes: it was just released in Spain the irresponsiblein Barcelona”.

When reading the work of the Argentine screenwriter, which was first written in Catalan, they knew that this was the one to bring to life, but now, in a Guayaquil context.

With its inauguration the thursday 28 July, the work will be exhibited on Friday the 29th Y Saturday 30followed by thursday 4, Friday the 5th Y Saturday August 6. With a $20 entry and if 90 minutes of entertainment, the presentations will be on the stages of The bootfrom the Salado boardwalk.

When summarizing the experience that the work has brought to the participants, opinions vary. While the actresses focus on defining the theme in the inclination of their characters to impulses and the irresponsibility of their actions, the director focused on the search and commitment.

“It’s a comedy, but not an easy one with jokes. Is a comedy of situations that have to do with the deepest and most intimate instincts of people, and this was taboo for actresses. They had to find, from their own selves, what they would be able to do from their impulses”, said Enríquez, the director of the Ecuadorian version. “Are you capable of letting yourself be carried away by your impulses?”

And that same theme represented one of the biggest challenges for the actresses, however, from different angles. For Carbo, the concept offered by Daulte prompted her to question herself: “We have talked about how, as human beings, the rules of coexistence that exist in a society allow us to repress those impulses until the moment we say to ourselves ‘ No, no, because this can happen’ (when taking action)”.

“But I think that you can healthily let yourself be carried away by impulses”, continues the actress, whose character is characterized by being manipulative. “You can say ‘I’ll see what happens’, as long as you don’t hurt anyone.” In addition, she assures that this questioning will also be transmitted to the audience: “when they see the work, the viewer will also have that post of questioning when, where and at what moment he has been impulsive”.

Instead, for Murillo, her biggest challenge was adapting to her character’s attitude: “I am an actress who gives herself all, but this character is repressed. She thinks and holds back; he does not. This cost me a lot.” Whereas in other roles she could be the embodiment of extroversion, with this text Murillo had to be the personification of restraint.

Diversity prevails in the expectations that each one has about the irresponsible. For Carbo, the questions are paramount: “I think that this will open a debate after seeing the work, and that is what is interesting. I think there will be something open.”

Instead, its director explains: “Through the laughter of the public, who laughs at themselves due to the reflection of the characters, it already makes one think: I make fun of myself, through what I am seeing… am I capable of to do that?”, and that is what is sought with future presentations.
