This January 4 marks the 50th anniversary of the writer’s body being found in Paris Jon Mirande Aipharsoro (Paris, 1925-1972) together with two bottles of whiskey and four empty tubes of barbiturates, after fifteen years of illness.
Coinciding with this date, today the Deabruaren Eskola literary project has published 12 articles, poems and letters written by the poet and author of the novel Haur besoetakoa translated for the first time into Basque, as well as a poem written by Mirande together with his Breton friend Goulven Pennaod.
All the texts have been published together with the original text in Breton, the French translation used as a bridge for the text in Basque and a commentary by a member of Deabruaren Eskola Mikel Soto.
As explained today in the presentation, nine people have participated in the translation, analysis and publication work: Mikel Soto, Irati Jimenez and Esteban Montorio, from Deabruaren Eskola; the Breton translator Padrig an Habask; the translators Joxe Austin Arrieta, Edorta Jimenez, Jon Alonso and Bego Montorio; and Urko Aiartza, director of the Olaso Dorrea Foundation.
The published texts are the articles “Eusko testigantza”, “Er devobis anmarvolobis…”, “Dogma berriak”, “Begiratu bat Francoren Espainiari”, “Gure sinestea” “Iudaica: Cha’ul Tchernikhovskiren poema bati buruz” and “Ben Gurion jauna nazional-sozialista da, ala?”, the poems “Gure printzesa ttipi beltzari” and “SS haiek noiz itzuliko zain” and five letters sent by Mirande to Telesforo Monzon between 1948 and 1957.
Jon Mirande
Jon Mirande was born in Paris to parents from Zuberota, worked as a civil servant and learned Basque at the age of twenty, in a period of fascination with ancient European languages. He published in Basque for the first time in the magazine Gernika, in 1984.
As his friend Txomin Peillen explained, he worked from the beginning as an “enfant terrible”, and showed ideas tending to paganism, Nazis, anti-Jewish and anti-Cistian. He published until 1962 in Herria, Euzko Gogoa, irrintzi Y Eganand, seeing that he had more and more problems to publish in these media, he created together with Txomin Peillen the magazine igela.
He also had trouble publishing his only novel, Haur besoetakoaand he had to wait for it until 1970, when Gabriel Aresti published it in the Lur publishing house, despite the fact that he already had it finished in 1959.
The plot of this story is a love story between a 30-year-old man and his 11-year-old goddaughter, and, as compiled by the expert Lurdes Otaegi in the collection bidegileak“his style fascinates and captivates the reader, as it is educated, brilliant and precious, without concessions”.
In the field of poetry, Koldo Izagirre wrote in the prologue of xx. mendeko poetry kaierak that “Jon Mirande developed a poetics of evil, and tried to give artistic value to some Basque elements forgotten at the time. He was both renovating and classicist”.
