Research conducted in recent years shows that the quality of fabrics available on the market is deteriorating year by year
We can observe this phenomenon, among others, when buying clothes in chain stores. In the past, we could enjoy them for several years, but today, after a few washes, they are no longer suitable for use. Materials marked as natural, often have additions of synthetics, often despite the information on the label, we are not sure about the quality of the purchased clothes.
Buying used clothes in thrift stores is becoming more and more popular. These clothes often do not have the original labels with the composition
Tiktokers have found a way to check the quality of the materials from which clothes are made. They have gone a step further than checking the quality of clothes at home. They do it in a thrift store using fire test and lighters.
It should be noted right away that any games or tests performed with fire can pose a real threat and lead to fire. In-store testing of this kind is unacceptable and dangerous.

How to properly perform a fire test at home to find out if the material is of high quality?
- Start by properly preparing the space and the tools you will be using.
- Use a lighter or a small candle.
- Prepare a fireproof container – a large plate, aluminum tray or ashtray.
- Get tweezers or pliers ready to grab the material.
- Prepare a piece of material that you will check.
If you have everything prepared, you can start the test. To do this, choose a suitable place where possible smoke will not pose a threat.
Start by placing a small candle in the center of the dish and light it. Then, use the tweezers to hold the material you will be inspecting. Bring the material close to the flame and see how it behaves. Already at this stage features of natural and artificial materials become visible. Then place the fabric over the fire and let it ignite. Here we also observe the behavior of the material, but also the smell, which reveals a lot of information. Be careful not to burn the entire scrap over the candle. Move the fabric away from the fire and observe its behavior after removal from the fire. We can put the rest of the burning material on our vessel and wait until it burns out, and finally examine the ashes and the remains of the burnt fabric.
- Cotton. It burns evenly, leaving a black or greyish ash. Well bleached, it gives little or no ash. The smell of burnt paper.
- Flax, hemp. It burns evenly, leaving a black or greyish ash. Well bleached gives little or no ash. The smell of burnt paper.
- Wool. It fries and melts into a dark brown ball. It leaves the smell of a burning horn.
- Natural silk. It melts to a shapeless black mass. The smell of burnt hair.
- Viscose. It doesn’t melt. Burns quickly, little ash. The smell of burning paper.
- Nylon. It melts before smoking, staining brown. The smell of a burnt horn.
- Polyester fibers. It melts before smoking.
- PVC fiber. It melts, chars, giving off a sweet, irritating smell.
- Casein fibers, argon. They burn without smell, forming balls.
If you have fabrics at home whose composition you do not know, fire test will help you to know their composition.
