“We started with the Carnival in March 2019. This edition of the festival revolves around the Soccer World Cup. We are inviting people to wear the La Tri shirt, there will be contests and many more surprises,” says Kahyda Rivera, president of the Campo Alegre neighborhood of the El Morro parish.
“In the fourth edition of the Morreño Goat Festival we will have delicious typical food such as Creole chicken dry, guatita, duck dry, shellfish and of course the star dish goat dry, among other delicacies. Come and participate with your family and friends in this World Cup edition because you will be rewarded with bicycles”, highlights the promoter and organizer of this event.
Prizes, dances and kite flying attracted dozens of families in the second edition of the festival ‘El Morro is tourism’
The idea is that he goes with his World Cup bar and can win many prizes. A bicycle will be delivered to the largest bar of the Ecuadorian team.
The Campo Alegre neighborhood of the El Morro parish, with the support of the Municipality of Guayaquil, through the Municipal Tourism Public Company, in alliance with the El Morro Parish GAD, holds this festival that brings together 20 gastronomic entrepreneurs from the aforementioned parish and its surroundings. In addition, through the Ruta del Chivo, there will be games for children, youth, and the community in general, with the theme of the World Cup.
“El Morro Parish invites all sectors of the Moreno, Guayaquilean and surrounding population to be an active part of this event, whose main objective is to promote ancestral gastronomy, through the recipes of yesteryear. “Thus demonstrating that our parish can be a gastronomic benchmark, thus promoting tourism in the Guayaquil canton,” says Kahyda.
The dolphins of the Gulf of Guayaquil are dying: these are the causes and what is done to prevent their extinction
Among other purposes of the festival is to strengthen community and family ties, promote the consumption of goat meat, encourage sports in children and young people, as well as the use of natural ingredients to prepare the dishes. Also generate a gastronomic space for family coexistence, promote outdoor recreation time”, says Rivera.
Seco de chivo is a very traditional dish in El Morro and for this edition, Rivera estimates that about ten goats will be slaughtered to prepare this dish typical of the area. “We have small breeding goats, goat-sheep, cattle. It was from the dried goat that we came up with the idea of organizing this festival. At some point we met with the residents of El Morro and we thought about what else we can do so that there are more visitors to the parish, they get to know it; we have to move… How many times did we hear various people -even entire families- say that they prepared the best dried goat. It was when we said then, let’s have a festival and contest so that locals and strangers can give their verdict, “says Rivera.
This year there will be no contest for the best dried goat dish. “Because we are leaving it for next year. We want this contest to become a gastronomic benchmark and we intend to make it even bigger. We want to invite cooks from Chongón, Posorja, Puná, Playas, among other towns in Guayaquil. This year only the local ladies will be there to prepare this delicious dish, but yes, there will be a lot of dried goat”.
Another of the purposes of this festival is to promote activities for the economic sustenance of the families that live in El Morro. “We need to reactivate after the pandemic. We organize it so that people get to know the local gastronomy, we need to preserve those traditions and not get lost in time. For example, there are families that prepare the dried goat with the recipe of the grandmother or great-grandmother, they are recipes that come from generation to generation. Some have varied, others have been given their own touch of flavor. Even the ladies who will cook the dried goat that day have been trained by the School of Chefs. The idea is that the parish will resurface for tourism, not only because of the beauty we have thanks to the dolphins or the Cerro del Muerto, but that the gastronomic part is also part of us”, Kahyda points out.
The proposal
“Especially that it is a gastronomic festival that highlights the recovery of the flavors of yesteryear,” says Kahyda. The event will have the following:
Gastronomic entrepreneurs: Within the festival we will have the participation of gastronomic entrepreneurs who will come from different neighborhoods of the El Morro parish, and Puerto El Morro, the same ones who will prepare: dry goat, roast goat, dry duck, dry Creole chicken, purple colada, leg broth, guatita, fried sea bass, chuzos, ceviches, among other Ecuadorian Creole dishes.
Goat route – World Cup version: In order to strengthen family ties and teamwork, this year the Ruta del Chivo will have its World Cup version, “That is, we will have a series of contests in which children, youth and adults will participate along with their families and friends, all in an environment of merriment to celebrate the inauguration of the Soccer World Cup that will be the day after the festival.

Activities within the festival
As complementary activities within the Festival del Chivo Morreño there will be the following:
Entrepreneurship Fair: Ten entrepreneurs from the parish and its surroundings will present their products to visitors so that they can be purchased, such as: jugs, jewelry, plants, groceries, sweets, among other local crafts, in general.
You will also find to taste: traditional desserts such as banana candy alfajores, quince, moncaibas, donuts, the traditional Morreño bread, sighs, Morreño cheese, Morreño butter, artisan cakes, desserts, empanadas, homemade ice cream, among others.
Artistic presentations in order to publicize local artists. “We will have several individual presentations and also from community folkloric groups such as: Raíces de mi tierra, the Candela orchestra that will delight us throughout the event, the singers Ian Alba Cadena, Joseph Haz, Héctor Garzón, Julio Larrea”, says Rivera.
Festival of the ‘Goat Morreño’ will bring together more than 20 entrepreneurs
