“They need to be arrested. Nein, nein. F*** off.” Finally, a Polish film we’ve been waiting for

The debuting director Maciej Kawalski decided to check what would happen if Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński, Witkacy, Joseph Conrad and Bronisław Malinowski had too much party together. In addition, we get a multi-story crime mystery, twisted atmosphere of Zakopane and a really excellent cast. The first trailer for the movie looks more than promising. Suffice it to say that the film has already been honored with the Audience Award at the 38th Warsaw International Film Festival.

“Dangerous Gentlemen”. It promises to be a really good movie for a change

“Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński (T. Kot), Witkacy (M. Dorociński), Joseph Conrad (A. Seweryn) and Bronisław Malinowski (W. Mecwaldowski), four celebrities of the Zakopane bohemia, wake up after a heavily drunk, all-night party. Heads are bursting from a hangover, no one remembers anything, and the situation is not improved by the body of an unknown man found on the floor. In addition, law enforcement officers are knocking on the door of the house, and this is just the beginning of the trouble. A race against time begins in which the heroes must free themselves not only from suspicions, but also from equally dangerous environmental rumors and solve the mystery of a mysterious death as soon as possible.

“Soon, thanks to these brilliant and risk-loving gentlemen, the vibrant cultural life of Zakopane will become the background of a great intrigue involving gangsters, artists and politicians, including Zofia Nałkowska and Józef Piłsudski. came to Poronin…” – we read further in the announcement of the film produced by the creators of the Oscar-nominated “God’s Body” Leszek Bodzak and Aneta Hickinbotham together with Agnieszka Dziedzic (“Trouble”).

The film is released for wide cinema distribution on January 20, 2023, and the first reviewers lavish praise on it. “It’s hard to resist the charm of this cinema. Young Poland through the eyes of Kawalski is colourful, charismatic and looking for new forms to express the anxieties dormant inside” – praises Łukasz Bąk from Onet, and Krzysztof Połaski from “Telemagazunu” praises that this is “Maciej’s daring debut Kawalski, who distorts Polish history. A little Polish ‘Hangover’ with Witkacy in the lead role, a little cinema in the style of early Machulski. Smart, funny and beautifully absurd.”

“It’s a game of genre cinema, retro, with expressive acting, which is emphasized by the excellent music by Łukasz Targosz, putting the whole thing in quotation marks” – adds Jacek Cieślak from “Rzeczpospolita”. In turn, Piotr Kozłowski from Dziennik.pl briefly states that the production “combines the magic of cinema and an element of madness”. “Kawalski’s film is quite a rare case where everything meshes together and it is hard to imagine that anything could be otherwise. A crime story with all its twists and turns is exciting, but even more exciting because familiar faces are involved, their behavior, the way they are associated with the sound of their name. One drives the other, the other drives the first – everything fits here like a glove” – analyzes Łukasz Kaliński from Quentin.pl.

The cast, apart from Tomasz Kot, Andrzej Seweryn, Marcin Dorociński and Wojciech Mecwaldowski, included: Michał Czernecki, Joanna Drozda, Wiktoria Gorodeckaja, Jacek Koman, Rafał Maćkowiak, Grzegorz Mielczarek, Marta Ojrzyńska, Modest Ruciński, Łukasz Simlat, Anna Smołowik, Sebastian Stankiewicz and Anna Terpilowska.
