Euskaraz irakurri: Ezetz asmatu zein izan den Uzei eta Euskaltzaindiarentzat urteko zorioneko hitza?
Euskaltzaindia and the Uzei Center for Terminology and Lexicography have chosen, once again, the most outstanding word of the year that is about to end.
This year, both institutions have highlighted the impact that “zorioneko”the word engraved on the Hand of Irulegi, has been in the media and in conversations since the vestige was found.
The Aranzadi Science Society announced in November that the word sorioneku (“zorioneko”, in the current standard Basque) is one of those that appears written on this bronze piece that keeps “the oldest testimonies written in Basque”.
It seems that the Hand of Irulegi will continue to give people something to talk about because, as the president of Euskaltzaindia, Andres Urrutia, says, “it is a multidisciplinary investigation, so for now we are waiting for what archaeologists, linguists and other scientists say and scientific”.
Uzei monitors the vocabulary on a daily basis, especially in the media, and Euskaltzaindia and the center itself use this work to choose the word of the year.
In 2022, the Hand of Irulegi has worked its way through darker issues like inflation and the Ukrainian war, Uzei and the Academy have explained. As an example, in a single week in November the word “zorioneko” received as many queries in the Euskaltzaindia Dictionary as any word receives in a full year.
