The second part of “Avatar” enjoys a lot of interest, although it’s been 13 years since the premiere of the first part. Not only the main characters enlarged the family – so did the production director, James Cameron, who has five children. As it turns out, however, they are not fans of the popular universe.
The second part is closer to children
In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, the journalist asked the director about the time jump, which had to be explained sensibly. Avatar: The Creature of Water takes place 15 years after the events of the first movie. The interviewer noted that it was quite a long period – Cameron’s children were too young to remember the premiere of “one”. This provoked the filmmaker to an intimate confession.
I have five children. They are of different ages, but you’re right. Moreover, they are not necessarily big fans of the first “Avatar” movie. “It’s Dad’s business,” you know what I mean.
Cameron joked. However, he added that his children liked the second part.
This is because it is more focused on children. I don’t say that as an insult, and I don’t mean seven-year-olds, more like teenagers and that deeply disturbing, chaotic time in a person’s life. I remember it from when I was their age, and I observe the same thing when I became a father.
– concluded the director. Cameron’s youngest child is 16, so he’s still going through puberty.
Avatar isn’t for kids?
From the beginning, the director did not hide that “Avatar 2: The Essence of Water” is largely a story about a family. But that doesn’t mean it’s a classic children’s story.
People say, “Oh my God, is this another Disney family story? Just like we wanted…” Well, it’s not that kind of family movie. It is in the same way that “The Sopranos” can be considered not.
Cameron told Total Film in an interview with Variety. He is of the opinion that children should not be brought to the screening. The film has a lesson mainly for parents.
In the first film, the character of Sam [Worthingtona, odwtórcy roli Jake’a – przyp. red.] he fundamentally changes the course of history as a result of his insane, almost suicidal heist. And Zoe’s character jumps, assuming some nice big leaves will break her fall. When you’re a parent, you don’t think that way. As a father of five, I wonder: what will happen when these characters grow up and realize that they are responsible for someone other than themselves?
He explained the way he wrote the family plot.
The first part of “Avatar” has been waiting for the possibility of production since the 90s, due to the need to use advanced technology. It was finally released in 2009 and was indeed considered a groundbreaking work. The budget was $237 million, and although the director was accused of overusing CGI, the film popularized new solutions in cinematography. 13 years after the premiere, the second part was released. The main characters – Jake and Neytiri are 15 years older, start a family and are forced to leave home. They seek refuge with the other tribes of Pandora. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana were back in the lead roles. The cast also includes Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver, CCH Pounder, Stephen Lang and Cliff Curtis.
