How did the idea of starting this festival come about?
I tried rum again after many years, during which I maintained a rejection towards that drink; but when I tried it, I realized that it was not what I had tried when I was young.. So I started to study, to taste and I became a rum collector, and now I am part of an international group. I also started going to festivals in other countries and noticed that it was something that didn’t exist here.. In Ecuador there is part for the fermented, the wines and beers; but distillates, which are strong drinks (hard liquor), they do not have a space, and there the idea was born with my partner, Henry Hill, to bring this event and do it in our city. We are generating a comfort, and the idea is that people can try the rum and gin and many cocktails and get an idea of why you should buy that bottle on the rack when you already had the opportunity to try it.
What potential does Ecuador have in this type of liquor?
We have flagship brands in Ecuadorwhich have been making rum for many years. We are an imminently agricultural country, a country that has a lot of sugar cane. So, wealth to be able to produce rum, we have, and we have high altitude rum and high altitude sugar cane. What’s more, there is a rum in Ecuador that is made with organic cane. There are many things that we are already doing.
What would you highlight about the guests at the congress?
People come with a lot of experience in the world of rum. For example, Enrique ComasDirector of Innovations at Bacardí Internacional, who is also the great-grandson of Facundo Bacardi, the creator of Bacardi. Also, Mauricio Solorzano, who is a global ambassador for Flor de Caña, who is a is a library of knowledge. Comes Jose Javier Dopeso, Vice President of Operations of Varela Hermanos, a flagship brand of Panama, which is Abuelo rum. Comes Franco Cabachia well-known person at the level of bartenders. And they also come from other houses with the intention of looking for distributorsand that is another of the interesting topics of the congress: that, apart from wanting to share their knowledge, they also come, in some way, to do business in Ecuador.
How would you summarize the experience of this event for those who decide to attend?
We are in the world of sensationsand the idea is that people go to live a pleasant moment and taste many of your favorite rums or that you have not tried. In the same way, there will be signature cocktails of the brands, chocolate tasting throughout the night and cigar tasting for those who like; in addition to live music. Everything for attendees to have fun.
