decided to publish an autobiography, in which he mentions both his work on the set of the cult TV series “Friends” and describes his struggle with addictions. His problems and addictions were talked about for many years, he also did not hide that at some point he stopped controlling his life to the point that he does not remember working on three seasons of the series.
Matthew Perry Explains Why He Can’t Watch ‘Friends’
“I took 55 Vicodin tablets a day, weighed 58 kg, starred in ‘Friends, which was watched by 30 million people – and that’s why I can’t watch the show, because I’m terribly skinny in it,'” Matthew Perry told one of the latest. He also revealed to CBC:
I can tell what drugs I’ve taken based on how I looked in a given season. That’s why I don’t want to watch the show – because that’s what I see.
He also confessed in his memoirs: “When I had more body, I drank alcohol. When I was skinny, it was pills.” During the interview with Diane Sawyer, the actor also watched a short clip from the production – just from the stage when he was skinny. “It’s very hard for me to watch. It’s a strange feeling in the sense that I feel sorry for this guy. This guy has lost control,” he described his feelings. Watching the scene from Chandler and Monica’s wedding, he also explained that he had been brought to the set that day from the rehabilitation clinic. “I’ll watch that scene over and over again. I looked good. Sober,” he confessed.
Perry maintains that he was never drunk or drugged on set, but that he often showed up at work “extremely hungover”: he sometimes had seizures because of it. “But Chandler never changed, the scripts didn’t change. My skill was to pull this addiction from him that I didn’t understand,” he described in an interview.
Perry has previously revealed that he went to rehab 15 times while working on the show. Due to his treatment, the shooting of the film “Serving Sara”, in which he starred with Elizabeth Hurley, was put on hold for some time.
“So much has been written about me in the past. I thought it was time for people to hear my own words. The highs were high and the lows were painful. But I lived to tell this story, even though sometimes it seemed impossible. Everything here It is,” wrote the actor before the book’s release.
Perry also admitted that he may have died at the age of 49 due to his addiction. Overuse of opioids ruptured his colon, which put him in a coma for two weeks. He spent almost half a year in the hospital. “The doctors told my family I had a two percent chance of survival. The ECMO machine was helping my heart and lungs function. It was a prayed miracle. No one would survive something like that,” Perry recalls.
Friends, Lovers and That Great Scary Thing is now on the New York Times bestseller list.
