After the association that managed Plateruena decided to dissolve and abandon the management of the space in 2021, the Durango City Council has announced that it will assume the management of Plateruena and that will reopen its doors in the coming weeks.
For this, Plateruena will work on three principles or bases: collaborate in euskaldunización From durango, offer shelter to associations and local agents and be an important square for creators and fans of Basque culture.
In a press conference held in Plateruena, the mayoress of Durango, Ima Garrastatxu, the councilor Patxi Lakuntza and the new promoter of Plateruena, Maider Larrañaga, have explained this challenge as difficult as it is attractive:
“The closure of Plateruena was a significant blow due to the importance that this space had in the town. During this time we have had to solve different headaches to face this important challenge, but we believe that they have helped to reinforce this new project,” they point out. municipal representatives.
The City Council wanted to thank the platform ‘Plateruena eta gero zer’ for contributing to enriching the approach through his own diagnosis. In this sense, municipal representatives have stressed that the diagnoses have emerged similar conclusions and lines of work.

Public management model
Once the three major objectives have been defined, the City Council has had to define the management model. Garrastatxu and Lakuntza point out that at this point they have had two main solutions on the table: put management out to public tender and delegate it to a company or private association, or that the Durango City Council assume the management of the cultural offer. Thus, the City Council has opted for the second option.
Once the decision regarding the management model has been made, Plateruena will become part of the cultural offer of the Durango City Council, at the same level as San Agustin Kulturgunea, the Museum of Art and History of Durango or the Bartolome Ertzilla Music School.
“We have opted to significantly improve the cultural offer in recent years, but we were aware of the void left by Plateruena. Now we are going to fill that void with enthusiasm and public resources, because in culture, as in health, we are committed to public services of quality”, have added the representatives from Durango.
Although Plateruena will be managed by the City Council, the consistory will create a meeting point called ‘Kultur Mahaia’ (Mesa de Cultura) so that different local agents and associations can participate. The objective of this culture table will be to manage opinions and requests in the most horizontal way possible.
