Elon Musk says he wants to lift Donald Trump’s ban on Twitter

Elon Musk said Tuesday it would lift Twitter’s ban on the former US president donald trump if the deal to buy the social network goes ahead.

“It would reverse the permanent ban,” added Musk, who is expected to become interim CEO after the acquisition. “I don’t own Twitter yet. So this is not like something that will definitely happen, because what if I don’t own Twitter?

“Permanent bans should be extremely rare and really reserved for accounts that are bots, scams, spam accounts… I think it was wrong to ban Donald Trump,” billionaire Elon Musk said Tuesday at the Future of the Car conference in Financial Times.

“I think that was a mistake, because it alienated a large part of the country and ultimately didn’t result in Donald Trump having no voice.”

Tesla chief’s $44 billion bid to buy Twitter has yet to win shareholder and regulator backingbut Musk has spoken out in favor of less content moderation and fewer bans.

Twitter permanently suspended Trump from the platform in January 2021 following the attack by its supporters on the US Capitol. The company said it made the decision after the January 6, 2021 riots “because of the risk of further incitement to violence.”

Trump was an avid tweeter and had more than 80 million followers on the platform at the time. Once Musk announced that he was interested in taking over the company in part to turn it into a free speech platform, questions were raised about whether he would invite Trump back on Twitter.

Trump said last month that he would not return to the social network if given the chance.
