LGBT movies, documentaries and series that celebrate diversity

This month marks the international pride dayalso know as International LGBT Pride Day. Next Tuesday, June 28, the rainbow colors of the flag that represents the community will be waved in different parts of the world.

On this date we present a selection of films, documentaries and series that address the LGBT issue from some perspectives and edges; such as exploring gender identity, acceptance, transition, lack of rights, discrimination, and feelings that many of the people in the community may share.

‘All in my family’ (Netflix)

in the documentary All in my family (This is my family) the gay documentarian Hao Wu records intimate moments of her diverse family, made up of her husband and children. ‘Everything Else’ (HBO Max)

Dafne is a trans woman who has just completed her transition. In her thirties and over, she has fulfilled her dream of having a vaginoplasty. However, not everything is illusion for her, her boyfriend decides to end the relationship and she, in addition to being heartbroken, is left without a job and with some other tragic events on top of her.

everything else is a Spanish series of eight episodes, written by April Zamora, trans actress who stars in the production. In addition to naturally showing the process that the main character goes through when she makes the transition, she addresses all the feelings, questions and searches that thirtysomethings usually go through. The series is available on HBO Max.

“I wanted to make a story that was personal, so it was inevitable to talk about transsexuality (…) In ‘Everything else’ I found it more interesting to have a trans character who is fully integrated into his circle, into his work…”, Zamora said in an interview for El Español.

‘To be or not to be’ (Rtve Play)

the spanish series To be or not to be, name inspired by the monologue of Hamlet, Its central character is Joel (Ander Puig), a teenager who at the age of 16 decided to accept his sexuality and begin his transition. Joel leaves behind his past as a girl and begins to face everything that being a trans man demands.

He dreams of becoming a great performer, but his biggest challenge will be to fight his fears and overcome all the prejudices implanted in society and his family. Added to all this is a young woman with whom he falls in love and with whom he finds it hard to be honest.

In its six episodes, it includes other homosexual characters, who, like Joel, are preparing to be theater actors. “It aims to be a transformative series, which gives visibility and naturalizes with freshness and humor the ever-increasing range of gender identities and expressions of today’s youth”, expresses the production of the series in which it acts in Ecuadorian. ‘Euphoria’ (HBO Max)

The American version of euphoria recounts the daily life of a group of high school students, marked by love, friendship, drugs, social networks, sex, and identity.

In addition to Rue, the series’ main character played by Zendaya. The series includes other multi-diverse characters, one of them is Jules, a trans woman who is shown in some everyday situations.

‘Laerte-se’ (Netflix)

Laerte Coutinho is a Brazilian cartoonist and activist who at the age of 58 manifested herself as a transvestite and later as a transgender woman. Her story is told in the documentary film Laerte-se, available on Netflix.

In the audiovisual, she reflects on her gender identity, the relationship with her body, dealing with her family, social pressures, what it means to be masculine/feminine, and the art of self-expression.

He also reveals that since he was 17 years old he knew he was gay, but that he decided to hide it and continue his life under the masculine image. This is how he had three marriages, three children and several awards for his creative work.

‘A Fantastic Woman’ (Netflix)

We all know the movie a fantastic woman Its central essence is the mourning process that its protagonist Marina goes through. (Daniel Vega) unexpectedly losing his partner Orlando. However, its director Sebastian Lelio It also exposes the way in which she is treated by the family of her deceased partner, and by all those around him.
