The Minister of Economic Development, Arantxa Tapia, has assured that “the noise of the Next funds have overshadowed other initiatives such as the Horizon Europe Program”, the main EU funding program for research and innovation, which turned out to be a “success” in strengthening the Basque innovation ecosystem.

The minister participated this Friday in San Sebastián in the conference “Strategy to support the participation of Basque companies in Horizon Europe”, in which representatives of 200 companies took part.

The conference highlighted the contribution and impact of the internationalization of Basque R&D&i and the competitive importance of Euskadi in European programs, as reported by the Basque Government in a statement.

Tapia has assured that the strengths of Euskadi in areas such as “innovation and high technological value” are a “reality” that allows companies to be competitive.

Success

Tapia referred to the European Horizon 2020 program which, in his opinion, has been a “success” for Basque participation, once its results are known.

He recalled that the return target set by the European Commission in the Strategic Book for Basque R&D&i in Europe for the period 2014-2020 reached 805.5 million.

Tapia has assured that the objective was “extremely ambitious” when it was set in 2014 and that, however, the results have been even better than expected, exceeding the goal by 7%.

“The success rate in Euskadi has stood at 19% when the European average has been 12%”, underlined the minister, who has advanced that the Basque Country could not miss this opportunity and must position itself in the new Horizon 2024 framework.
