New type of gasoline in Ecuador for users would be good if it really is of better quality; for others it would only be a commercial strategy

The announcement of the possibility of a gasoline that is between the extra-eco (85 octane, at $2.55) and the super (92 octane, at a price of up to $4.75) could be interesting for some consumers, but It is still something that will have to be seen if it becomes a reality. Even while, many are still in the dilemma between putting the one that is better for your vehicle and the one that helps your pocket the most.

Fabián Ruiz, who drives a Hyundai Ioniq hybrid car, comments that until recently he stayed with the super, but he has been using eco for a couple of weeks, because his economy is not enough, and this despite the fact that his car consumes little. For this reason, despite his recommendations, he has preferred to switch from gasoline until the supermarket goes down.

If another gasoline comes out – the new one would be 89 octane, and a super 95 octane gasoline could also be offered at the same price as the super -, he hopes that the price will be good and the quality will improve, because the one currently sold leaves a lot be desired.

Meanwhile, Gabriela Torres, who drives a BYD brand mini-SUV, says that she has no choice but to continue with the super, because she already tried to make the change and the car began to fail, so she had to use it again. super.

“It’s time to stay, because if the car doesn’t get damaged and it’s more expensive,” says Torres, who thinks that, if another gasoline is obtained, “hopefully it will meet the octane number needed by the cars used in Guayaquil (and in Ecuador in general)”.

Fernando Mosquera now prefers eco-country for his Nissan Sentra car, after using super and mixing, for economic reasons. “Since the hike I had to switch to echo. It’s a lot of difference, “says this driver.

Regarding a third option, he comments that it could be interesting, but it will have to be seen.

Israel Armendáriz used to put super on his Lada Niva and then he switched to echo; but, anyway, for the current value of the eco, he finds it much more expensive than before, because now he puts $10 on it and it only lasts for a day and a half. “With the eco: that gasoline is not worth it (…); it should be improved. Even with another car that I have, I put it super, but it doesn’t rev well, it stays. They don’t reach the octane ratings they are selling us,” he says. For him, a new intermediate gasoline would only be a pretext for the other to rise.

voice of the experts

Fausto Aguirre, head of the Neo Chevrolet workshop, thinks that if a new intermediate gasoline is going to be created, it will not be enough to improve the necessary quality; but, if it is really going to improve in octane, yes it would be beneficial.

Remember that most car manufacturers that are sold locally recommend, on average, 92 octane; and that, when you change to a lower gasoline, that is, from super to eco-extra, you will cause problems, such as lack of power, higher fuel consumption, poor performance on climbs, start to have noises in the engine, what people usually call rattle, which are knocking noises inside the engine, which in the medium or long term cause severe damage inside it, such as problems in the rims or wear in the valve seats.

He adds that externally there will be problems with the oxygen sensors and even with the catalysts (designed to reduce environmental damage). “To extend the useful life of the elements, more frequent maintenance should be carried out (especially in injectors, filters, spark plugs and cleaning of the gasoline tank)”, Aguirre points out.

Santiago Casanova, a Chery automotive engineer, agrees with Aguirre and comments that, according to the technical aspect, the car is designed from the factory to work with the best fuel available.

Casanova says that if this is not respected, the wear will be faster. For this reason, they recommend their clients to continue using super, as much as possible, to keep it in good condition; and if they go for the extra, that they at least respect the changes of the filters and other necessary components in the time recommended by the manufacturer.

“If you work from the beginning with super, you will have better engine efficiency, you will feel that the mileage and travel that the vehicle gives is higher. But if you work with extra from the beginning, yes you are going to feel a loss of power (…), you are going to feel an excessive expense in the short or long term”, indicates Casanova, who hopes that, if a new gasoline comes out or improve the octane of those that are already sold, that octane is real and verified.

About mixing super and extra or eco, Aguirre comments that it is not recommended, but it is possible. It can help, but he does not believe that this improves the power, especially because it would be necessary to see if the gasolines really have the octane rating that one buys or if the gas station does not mix them before, because he has felt even with his own car that in certain places It makes him super and he doesn’t respond in the same way.

Casanova adds that mixing will not increase the octane rating and that it is not recommended to use an octane rating lower than that recommended by the manufacturer or to mix the fuels.

While, regarding the additives, both comment that they can help, but not much; It will depend on the brand or even the origin. Performance varies.

A dispatcher from a Terpel gas station on Avenida de las Américas comments that some drivers who changed to extra buy additives to try to compensate for the change. (I)
