30% of fixed internet contracts are fiber optic and wireless technologies

After two years in which homes became workplaces and schools, the trend regarding internet technology that families require has been changing. In this sense, fiber optic connections have become more popular, competing with traditional connections that led the market for years.

Three out of ten fixed internet connections are non-traditional technologies; such as fiber optics (FTTH) and wireless (LTE), depending on the Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel). Together, these technologies represent 30% of fixed connections in Peru.

Installations of these technologies grew by 6.8%, while connections to traditional Internet networks —which use the telephone line— fell to 3.9%. On the other hand, HFC connections dropped by 3.7% until December 2021.

“The health crisis completely changed the family dynamic. Internet users now prioritize the quality of Internet technology and investigate which one best suits their needs”, said Victor Jaúregui, Vice President of WIN.

New actors and bigger deals

According to the same Osiptel report, WIN gained the most new users, installing around 287,000 new connections in 2021 alone. This represented a growth of 400% in its connections, in just one year, in this way it has entered the top 3 of corporations with the largest number of fixed internet connections nationwide.

“Being among the first companies with high demand for internet service is quite an achievement. It is the first time that a Peruvian internet company appears among the three corporations with the most fixed connections nationwide, especially since only this year we have started our operations in the provinces. Our main objective will continue to be user satisfaction”, added Jáuregui.

It should be noted that home internet contracts have continued to increase by more than 12%, in a year. This trend came after the demands of the pandemic at home. By the end of this year, 2022, the telecommunications sector expects similar growth.
